About Max
- What kind of experience do you have?
I worked at a prestigious primary school in Islington, The Children's House Upper School, before attending The University of Sussex, where I achieved a first class degree, including the highest marks achieved by a student in numerous modules. Here I developed a specific interest in both English literature and visual learning, a interdisciplinary notion I believe key to the engagement with students today, and vital in helping children who find literacy a challenge.
During my time at The Children's House, where I was CRB checked, I worked with students both in groups and on a one-to-one basis, with a particular emphasis on literacy and English skills for students. Throughout my period at the school, I developed and maintained specific literacy programmes designed to help students to learn and flourish both academically and socially. I also tutored students out of school hours throughout my time, including helping to run summer camps for children. I consistently worked with disadvantaged and dyslexic children, as well as those who struggled with the English language. This is a particular passion of mine, and one that installed my belief in establishing meaningful relationships with students over long periods of time.
At Sussex University I worked under the Sussex Mentorship Scheme, helping students academically with essays, dissertations, and study-skills. Here I helped students to develop a mindset whereby education, essay writing, and examinations can be a source of enjoyment and passion, something with which students can take pride in. This philosophy is key to my brand of teaching, one based on trust and enjoyment, and developing a way of approaching source material that is 'student-centric', and based on their personalities.
