About Stephanie

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a flute player, I have around twenty years playing experience, much of which has consisted of playing classical music in ensembles and orchestras in both Manchester and London including the world-famous London Symphony Orchestra, Halle, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and London Philharmonic Orchestras in venues like the Bridgewater Hall, Philharmonic Hall and the Royal Festival Hall.

As well as leading workshops in primary schools in East London boroughs, I have also done a significant amount of work with the London Philharmonic Orchestra's educational/community programme, which involves teaching and leading workshops and is a fantastic outreach programme for musicians of all standards and walks of life. I also currently work as a musician for the London Symphony Orchestra's Discovery programme which enables me to work with children with special needs in a variety of settings.

I have worked as a flute tutor at Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College and a flute, recorder and clarinet tutor at Moor Allerton Preparatory School in Didsbury. I currently hold the position of flute tutor in Kew Green Preparatory School and St Catherine's High School in Twickenham.

I have taught piano privately to early grade students for the past 3 years and can tailor lessons to individual needs.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

- Where and with whom did you train?

Gareth Davies - Principal Flute London Symphony Orchestra
Susan Thomas - Principal 2nd Flute with the London Philharmonic Orchestra
At the Royal Northern College of Music with Peter Lloyd - Ex Principal Flute of the London Symphony Orchestra
At the Royal Northern College of Music (Junior Dept) with Laura Jellicoe - Ex Principal of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and current Freelance Flautist and Benjamin Powell - Manchester based Freelance Pianist and Accompaniest

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Rishi (flute) is an eight-year-old boy and a pleasure to teach. I began teaching him from a beginner level around a year and a half ago and we're already comfortably progressing through grade 3 (ABRSM). Rishi loves playing some fun flute duets at the end of our lessons, his favourite being the Match of the Day theme tune!

Beth (piano) is a very keen student I began teaching more recently. She has hopes to study music at university and would like to begin piano lessons so she is more able to play through and analyse scores. Our music lessons have a more holistic, academic approach as Beth is a very bright student and always keen to learn more!

Hello, my name's Stephanie and I am a friendly enthusiastic teacher who welcomes pupils of all ages and abilities

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach flute (piccolo), piano, recorder, music theory and offer GCSE and A-Level music exam support

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I'm a recent graduate of the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. I graduated with a First-class Bachelor's with Honours.

I have passed grade 8 flute with distinction (ABRSM)
I also have grade 6 distinction on the piano (ABRSM)

I have an A* in GCSE Music (2005) and an A in A level music (2007)

- How much do you charge?

I charge £40 per hour for individual lessons. I will happily travel to pupils but do ask for a contribution to cover the cost of travel expenses.
For younger or less experienced instrumentalists, I can offer a shorter, reduced-price lesson; £25 for 30mins, £32 for 45mins.
I teach groups for the same rates - just split the costs, eg. £20 per person per hour for a group lesson with two pupils.
These prices are negotiable if the need is strong but the funds aren't necessarily there.

- Where do you teach?

Below is a list of the areas I am happy to travel to:
Wandsworth, Clapham, Kensington, West Kensington, Fulham, Putney, Wimbledon, Ravenscourt Park, Goldhawk Road, Mortlake, Chiswick, Kew, Acton, Ealing, Hounslow, Wesbourne Park, Royal Oak, Shepherd's Bush, Richmond, Ham, Twickenham, Kingston Upon Thames and Central London. If you live further a field, then please leave a message with me and I will get back to you with my availability to travel to you.

I am able to drive to teach pupils but can also travel to areas via the tube from Hammersmith.
Please contact me to discuss where you are and we can work out a travel plan.

- When are you available?

My timetable is fairly flexible given the nature of my work and I will happily teach at any time of any day of the week.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and the following abilities/grades:

Flute beginner - grade 8 +
Piano beginner - grade 3/4
Recorder beginner - grade 5
Music Theory - beginner - grade 8

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Every student is different, and many like to play for the sheer enjoyment of it, without the pressure of working for exams.
As graded exams go, I am more familiar with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) when teaching flute, recorder and piano If the student has a preference and a valid argument for taking an exam through another board, this isn't a problem. However, the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exam syllabi are very well respected and cover all the essentials of playing a musical instrument, as well as offering a broad and substantial selection of repertoire.

For GCSE/A level music, I am more familiar with some boards than others, but provided you let me know which board/exam you are studying for, I will learn the syllabus in preparation for our lessons.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I use Skype and email to tutor online.
Skype can work very well in these circumstances, but it's not essential, so if you don't own a webcam, email is fine.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

If you'd like to start learning to play a new instrument, or you're further up the ladder and looking to take an exam, I'll do whatever I can to help you achieve your aspirations. I tailor lessons for your individual needs, we'll work at whatever rate suits you, and most importantly you'll have fun!
