About Claire
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught students of all ages and standards, including complete beginners, and have experience of working towards ABRSM grade exams with students (all of whom have been very successful!) I have experience of coaching chamber ensembles, and have taught primary school children in groups of up to 30. I have also enjoyed teaching adult students and more advanced players.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Not currently.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I learnt with the internationally esteemed flute teachers Gareth Davies and Daniel Pailthorpe. Prior to my studies at the Royal College of Music, I studied at the University of Oxford (with an academic scholarship), where I learned the flute with the inspirational flautist Michael Cox, principal of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. I also studied for two years at Chetham's School of Music with Katherine Baker, principal flautist of the Halle Orchestra. I was the principal flautist of the National Youth Orchestra for two years, in which time I received expert tuition from several musicians who have received worldwide acclaim.
I currently perform regularly as guest principal flute in London orchestras alongside my position at the English National Opera, as well as regular recording sessions and engagements as a soloist.

On the flute I teach all ages and all levels - everyone is welcome!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am happy to prepare my students for ABRSM grade exams and Trinity College exams, and to enter them for these exams. However, if my pupils don't wish to do exams I am also pleased to work away from a syllabus, and just to enjoy making music!
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I enjoy hearing students play and working with them, whatever their musical background or level of experience. I am an enthusiastic teacher and always happy to be flexible and to progress at a pace that suits you. I'm always pleased to meet new students, so please get in touch by phone or email - I'd love to hear from you!
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Our daughter is a beginner and at all times Claire has combined great patience with fun. Our daughter always looks forwards to her time with Claire and has made great progress. Claire is meticulous with her approach to good technique but always explains herself very well. She is also always open to suggestions about music our daughter would like to play. Claire is also very reliable, organised and communicates well ahead of time if she has other commitments. We would strongly recommend Claire as a tutor.
