Tutoring Approach:
* Active and positive approach to teaching, which never allows myself or students to get stuck in a rut or a mind-numbing routine.
* Every student is different and needs exercises/teaching techniques to be adapted and structured around their individual capabilities.
* Improvement by demonstration, followed by an explanation. Playing duets and developing the musical ear are a major part of this.
* Recording parts of the lesson for the student to refer to between lessons. As a practice technique this is proving very beneficial.
* Developing the ability to laugh when things go wrong is vital in learning to play any musical instrument - especially the horn!!
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Emily teaches piano to my daughter, who thoroughly enjoys her lessons and is extremely eager to practice! My memory of piano lessons was suffering with a stuffy strict teacher - none of that when Emily arrives! She knows how to engage children and uses little tricks to maintain interest, making lessons fun and educational. She is a delightful warm person and very easy to talk to. Amy has developed a keen interest in music, all testament to Emily's skill as a teacher, and we are delighted with her progress.
Emily teaches my son Seb to play the horn. Her band performed at Seb's school and after seeing them he was desperate to learn. Emily took time to visit us and introduce the instrument to us, and his enthusiasm has only grown since he started playing. He really enjoys his lessons and tells me Emily is very kind! Seb's playing has developed quickly under her guidance and he is ready to do Grade 1 after 2 terms. Emily's commitment & enthusiasm for teaching are inspiring, I recommend her wholeheartedly.
Finlay has been learning the trumpet since he was 7 and has flourished in Emily's care. She has a way of motivating him without him feeling pressured - there are no tears or tantrums! Emily teaches with a dedication that is second to none and is passionate about what she does. She organised a trip to take a group of pupils to a classical concert completely of her own volition. Her nanny skills & experience leave me in no doubt that she has a natural rapport with children & is a highly responsible teacher.
Emily is a kind, positive and inspiring teacher. She has been teaching the trumpet to my son Harry for the past year, during which time not only have his technique and ability improved, but also his confidence. He has recently passed Grade 4 and won his school competition! Emily makes learning fun and now Harry is enthusiastically working towards his next exam as well as taking part in school concerts and ensembles. I recommend Emily wholeheartedly to all parents whose child wishes to play an instrument.
Emily has been known to me since 1995 when she was a pupil of mine. Emily showed promise from the early stages & by the time she reached Year 10 at The King's School I was pleased to use her emerging skills to develop the newer generation of students at school & apply the knowledge she was accumulating in her experiences at The Royal Academy of Music. She has a patience & calm about her teaching which students immediately respond to, with careful explanation and a supporting nature at the core of her work
Since graduating with a First Class degree in Music, Emily has maintained her links with the world of music, using her expertise in brass playing, singing & piano. I had no hesitation in asking her to tutor my son in preparing for his Grade 8 horn exam. She gave him excellent advice, discussing & demonstrating the musical interpretation and technique that Luke needed to gain his Distinction pass. She is an encouraging person who uses positive criticism to enable others to improve their performance.
I can vouch that Emily has been the most wonderful nanny in the time we have been lucky enough to have her. She is patient, kind and loving with the girls, a warm welcome addition to our family. Emily is sensible, practical & well organised. She is a confident, honest, genuine person who creates a real bond with people she comes into contact with. Emily is very well educated, creative, and her training as a classical musician allows her to offer much to any potential employer.
