About Annie

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been a full-time tutor for 7 years now in Somerset. I have been helping adult students wanting to move to France from beginners to more advanced students. I also successfully help AS and A2 Students for their exams and their future entrance to University. For instance, I used to help students study more in depth the novel Mme Bovary for their A level exam when this novel was on the A2 curriculum. I have also helped a lot of IGCSE and GCSE students. I used to work in America, Seattle, for The Alliance Française in addition to being a part-time private tutor. I also worked as a part-time private tutor while living in Wales (2004-2008). I am committed and truly want to help students. As I am a French person I guide students with their pronunciation and can readily help them with expressions, make them aware of the standard of the language they want to use or already use and also avoid for them some mistakes while abroad. I do find that it is important to listen to my students so I can help them reach the goals they are aiming at. I truly enjoy seeing my students improve their confidence in spoken and written French. I also help French students with their English exams online (up to the Baccalauréat).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an up-to-date DBS certificate from 2017.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I successfully completed the PTLLS course ( Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) Level 4, Strode College in 2013.
I would say that I do like Geoff Petty. I focus on correct grammar, pronunciation, speaking and writing and listening .Therefore my sessions do involve real practice on listening, talking, speaking and writing. I do offer my own recordings with my own sentences to support the material that we have already covered in the sessions. In a way my style of teaching is still a work in progress but the feedback I receive is generally very good. I adapt to each person's needs while still following important guidelines which matter to me such as a structured session. My keywords are clarity, simplicity, fun and efficient learning.
Each student is unique therefore I adjust to the needs and level of the person. Making sure students are improving and are at ease to ask questions is primordial to me. I do ask of my students to be able to set aside time each week to study, this can either be studying what we have just done during the class, listening to the radio, watching a short program regularly/ a movie or write a summary of a chapter in a book they are reading etc. My goals is to help you find what works best for you. For me, learning a language is a lot about brainwashing oneself with that language. It may sound strict but it works.

Here are a few comments from some of my students so you can judge for yourself:
Sarah and Richard September 2017:
We have been working with Annie for three years now and really enjoy our sessions with her. We are a couple who studied French at GCSE and A level many years ago and who now spend a lot of time in France on holiday. We wanted to brush up on our French in order to converse with the locals and get more out of our visits to France. Annie is great and allows you to find your own pace whilst paying attention to grammar and helping increase your knowledge of the language. She speaks French very clearly, making it easier to understand. We have used a number of text books as reference points in our sessions to increase our vocabulary and to understand verbs, tenses and conjugations.  We are now more confident when speaking French and continue to improve. Thank you Annie.
Chris and Maggie 28th September 2017
We can thoroughly recommend Annie.  We started lessons with Annie to improve our school-level French and to be better at conversation when in France. She prepares very well and for us the combination of conversation and the use of a text book has been the right approach. It has helped us to refresh our basic grammar which we have found very useful. Finally the lessons, which she tailors to your interests and requirements, are very enjoyable.

Here is a comment by William ( August 2017) who took his French IGCSE at Millfied school in Sommerset: "Hi Annie, I would just like to thank you for helping me with my French as I felt much more confident before taking the exam and I hope that my result reflects all of the hard work. You have been so kind and patient with me and I wish you all the best in the future.
Thank you again.Will.

Kate from Blagdon :
"Annie has a natural talent for teaching her native tongue. However, she backs this up with a useful knowledge of grammatical terms and rules, whilst also ensuring that the student is 'au fait' with colloquial French, both spoken and written. She has a knack of emphasizing the positive and endless patience when it comes to ensuring that the student has fully understood the point, as well as forgiving when I have forgotten it once again! Annie is both reasonable and flexible with a warm personality and a nice sense of humour. I have not a moment's hesitation in recommending that she become your French teacher if you are based in or near Glastonbury."

Rosie from Wells tells us her point of view: "Annie is a very good French tutor, she is kind, smart, patient. My French has improved after a few lessons and I really look forward to our next session together."

Anne from Wales sent me this testimonial "I would highly recommend Annie as a tutor to anyone learning French. She really knows her stuff – not just as a native French speaker but as a teacher who is tuned in to where a learner has problems and knowledge gaps. She is very helpful in supplying the information that you don't get in the textbooks and in providing insights into both written and spoken French. Add to that friendliness and a sense of humour and you have everything you could ask for in an expert language tutor."

I am very grateful to have committed students who are courteous, reliable and eager to learn. They are all different from various nationalities and backgrounds with varying abilities. It is a pleasure for me to see someone who could not speak a word in French first and then being able to translate short texts and speak more one step at a time. I have helped young people find the confidence to speak in French and also help them want to surpass their own level of written French. To me it is like working in a small team and I do enjoy that very much.

I am a native French speaker, fluent in English and French with experience and qualifications to help adults and teenagers alike. I am very motivated, organized, patient and non-judgemental of my students' learning abilities and levels. I am very familiar with the GCSE and A2 level curriculum especially with Edexcel and AQA. This is my 7th year of full-time tutoring. I AM ONLY OFFERING ONLINE SESSIONS AT THE TIME BEING AND I AM WILLING TO OFFER DISCOUNTS, please contact me to know more. Previously, I did some part-time tutoring in America and Wales. I offer real support and guidance to French GCSE, AS and A level Students. I work closely with the curriculum, helping students go through mock exams, providing exercises either of my own or that I find in GCSE, AS and A level books. Most of the books I use are AQA/ Edexcel approved. Speaking, writing, listening and reading are covered in my sessions and I provide weekly homework which is in keeping with the curriculum. I do tend to focus on the Grammar as I find it so important. I also provide my own recordings for pronunciation and grammatical points so students have a way of improving their speaking and listening skills. I also record the IRP for A2 students preparing with AQA. This helps students with their confidence for the exam. I find my role is to guide students in their speaking, listening and understanding the Grammar more in depth so they get the best chances possible for their exams.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I offer sessions for GCSE, AS, A2 students in addition to adults for beginner, intermediate and more advanced levels such as conversational classes where we do study Grammar too. I also provide my own recordings to help students improve their listening skills.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a University Degree (DEUG) -similar to a BA in England- in English and American Literature and History (Classes were held in English therefore I read all novels, plays and other reference books in English). The DEUG also included English-French and French-English Translation, English Grammar, English and American Politics and Linguistics. (Université de Bretagne Occidentale, Finistère, Brittany, France). I also had Spanish classes (History, Literature, translation French-Spanish and Spanish-French) at University. In 2013, I successfully completed the course PTLLS ( Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) Level 4, in Strode College, Somerset. I also have a Baccalauréat in Modern Languages ( English, Spanish and French Literature) Philosophy and Latin. Philosophy was the main subject of the Baccalauréat A2 ( série Littéraire) alongside Classical French literature with real importance given to Modern languages such as English and Spanish. I also studied Latin for 3 years. This was mostly translation of Latin into French.

The Baccalauréat is slightly higher than A levels. The DEUG provides a good foundation for teaching English to French students up to Baccalauréat Littéraire.

- How much do you charge?
I charge £20.00 per hour for beginner, intermediate individual adult learners and £20.00 for advanced individual adult learners too.
For 2 adults of a similar level, wishing to learn together, I charge £25.00 an hour for beginner, intermediate plus advanced students.
£25.00 for GCSE students and £28.00/30.00 for AS/ A level students. I prefer to have individual sessions for GCSE, AS/A level students to give them the best opportunity to get good grades.

- Where do you teach?
I generally teach from my home. I also offer tuition via skype for GCSE , AS, A2 and adult students. I do insist for GCSE students that they are self-motivated and willing to do their homework. Otherwise, I can also teach in local cafes in Glastonbury for adult students if prefered.

- When are you available?

I tutor from Monday afternoons to Friday, through the day and up to 7 pm.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Adult students: beginners, intermediate, advanced/conversational levels. Students preparing for exams: GCSE and AS and A level students.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I help students for French GCSE and AS/ A level especially AQA and Edexcel as I have a lot of experience with those 2.
I work closely with the curriculum, helping students go through mock exams, providing exercises either of my own or that I find in GCSE, AS and A level books. Most of the books I use are AQA or Edexcel approved. Speaking, writing, listening and reading are covered in my sessions and I provide weekly homework which is in keeping with the curriculum. I also provide recordings which help remember grammar points plus vocabulary.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I offer online tuition via Skype

- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am extremely motivated to help people get real tangible results. Futhermore I am organised and qualified and have experience. I am here to help and as I learnt other languages such as Latin and Spanish plus English, I know perfectly well what it takes to learn a language. If you do the homework I give you, you will see results. Learning grammatical points or vocabulary in French does not have to be boring. Find out why you want to learn French first and then set yourself easy and realistic goals and stick to them. Having someone to help and guide you will make your path clearer. I find that giving positive but realistic feedback is very important to encourage students. Learning French does not have to be a lonely crossing of the desert.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak French because I am a native French speaker but I was very influenced by Classical French writers such as Flaubert, poets such as Verlaine and philosophers such as Montesquieu who translated to a high level how beautiful the language is. I also studied French literature at University and studied Philosophy for the Baccalauréat so we did study Bergson, Bertrand Russel and other philosophers in French. This does make a difference on how you write French yourself.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For me if I have to name someone it is Victor Hugo, a 19th French century writer. His poetry and novels did help shed some light on the conditions of the working masses such as children working in mines etc.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I like the fact that French is very versatile. To me, spoken French can be relaxed and fun whereas written French can be all about poetry, creativity and imagination and beauty.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

The French language is very synonymous with Poetry to me, it is also a very logical language which is very good for the brain! By speaking French, I hope I transmit my culture to a certain extent, by this I mean French Literature above all.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I find that often British people are not taught Grammar in school at all and this can be a real detriment to learning French properly. French is a very logical and precise language. I find that helping people grasp certain grammatical points in English grammar helps them better understand French grammar. However one does not have to learn complicated grammatical concepts, I use " shortcuts" to help people understand the grammar, this simplifies things for them and they can use these tools in "real life" French language.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

If I am to give an anecdote, it would not be for French, it would be regarding when I was so eager to read novels in English and I would spend my time reading in English during Maths classes in school, much to the dislike of one of my Maths teachers. Some years before, I had asked the Maths teacher to teach Maths in English and he did not like that at all and thought I was being rude. He did not see that for me it was just a necessity, if I were to pay attention to Maths, it had to be done in English. If you see that your child is passionate about one school subject in particular, make sure you support your child's learning of that subject.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I found that living in America, England and Wales has helped me a lot to gain insight into the English language and also into the behaviours of the people in the different countries I lived as there are different ways of expressing oneself from one country to the other.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I am patient, observant of my students' needs and I am a non critical creative person. I treat each student as a unique learner. I have 6 years of experience as a full-time French tutor. Prior to this, I always helped people learn French on a part-time basis. I helped people in America, Wales and England. It does appear that my students are really enjoying their sessions with me as they keep coming back sometimes for 2 years or sometimes a little more to improve and polish their skills. I learnt English Literature and History at University and also Spanish. I also learnt Latin in school doing translations from Latin into French so this required a certain amount of rigour and logic. I am absolutely motivated to help people and I am organised too.
