About Samantha
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am experienced with teaching children - having previously run music workshops, being a tutor on the SCO's community Vibe project for both violin and clarsach, and organised a music day for a year of school children. Along with this I often teach for the Edinburgh branch of the feis, teaching groups and individuals traditional Scottish music on both violin and clarsach.
I teach children both violin and harp and have experience leading them towards graded qualifications. I am greatly interested in the education psychology behind teaching and using techniques that allow each particular pupil to greater understand the lesson and practice requirements. I am studying BEd course at the RCS to lead into becoming a classroom music teacher. This has an emphasis on teaching psychology which I will bring into the lessons.
I teach adults both violin and clarsach and have been preparing pupils for graded exams. I enjoy teaching adults, and appreciate that busy schedules might not allow for much practice in between lessons. In these situations I can help prepare a practice plan to fit into the allotted time.
I also have experience as a classroom assistant for a music class working with adults with learning disabilities, which I found highly rewarding and stimulating. I greatly enjoyed this, and would be keen to be involved with something similar again. I am also aware of many alternative teaching resources and software to help aid learning dependent on each pupil's requirements.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have my disclosure (PVG). (This is the Scottish version of the DBS)
- Where and with whom did you train?
Currently training with Heather Downie and Corrina Hewat on Scottish Harp, and Sharron Griffifths for Pedal Harp.
I have studied up to HND level for classical music performance at Edinburgh college.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my students is a professional, learning clarsach as a hobby. He is greatly enthusiastic and finds it exceptionally relaxing from his high powered job.
One of my violin students is currently learning fiddle tunes, and enjoys learning by ear.

I'm a teacher, performer, and composer of clarsach/harp, piano and fiddle based in Glasgow. I am involved in teaching, leading and assisting children's workshops along with teaching and tutoring on a one-to-one basis for both children and adults.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the piano from beginner to advanced, and all styles.
I teach the lever-harp (Clarsach) from beginner to advanced.
Classical violin or fiddle at every level.
I teach/tutor ABRSM theory to grade 8, and Trinity theory to diploma.
I am also available to tutor for Highers National qualifications
I am a great believer in tailoring lessons to the individual and the way in which they learn.
I teach using a mixture of aural and sheet music depending upon the individual, and will teach music theory as we progress to create a greater understanding of the music played.
With adults I like to start with discussing your aims and intentions which we can address and reach for.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
1st class honours from the royal conservatoire of Scotland (BMusTrad)
Piano: Grade 8 with distinction (2015)
Clarsach/ Lever harp: Grade 8 with distinction (2011)
Violin: Grade 8 (2007)
Theory: AMusTCL (2014)
HND Classical Music Performance, Distinction (2014)
Diploma in Higher Education - Music Education (2016) - from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 an hour.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my home, or I can travel.
If I am to travel, I would request to use your Clarsach. However, I always suggest coming to mine as my teaching materials are here and it provides greater flexibility during the lesson. I also charge extra for travelling.
- When are you available?
I am available all year around (regardless of school holidays - however school pupils may wish to have no lessons during half term, but that is down to you).
I teach on every day - however spaces are limited during some days. If you give me a list of when you are free I will be able to match up our timetables and give you options.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from beginner to advanced.
I teach children (from 5) to adults. With younger children with shorter attention spans I would suggest a 20 minute lesson (£8) but this is entirely dependent on the child's development and not something decided strictly from age. Equally, with very young children, I often suggest a more general 'music skills lesson' learning notation, trying different instruments, musical games and song whilst gradually introducing the instrument of choice.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for:
ABRSM and Trinity exams (violin, lever harp, pedal harp, piano and theory) and the RCS folk exams (fiddle and clarsach). I am willing to discuss the various merits of the two different exam boards and give advice on which one might be preferable.
I also play piano which allows me to accompany violin students to prepare for exams.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I use skype, and a set up of microphones. For this I would ask that all music is swapped prior to the lesson so it can be printed out as switching between windows is time consuming and distracting.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe that a tutor has to be enthusiastic about both teaching and the subject. I prepare lesson plans for each student, and have a wide range of materials which will allow for a diverse selection of music to study and enjoy.
Ultimately music is a beautiful thing, and lessons should encourage that, rather than become a chore. I aim for my lessons to be instructive, but relaxing and fun, focussing on technique, musicality, and the pupil.
