Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Clarinet and Recorder and cover a variety of styles from Classical to Balkan and Klezmer. I can also help students prepare for their Music Theory, GCSE and A Level Music examinations.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where I obtained my Bachelor of Music (Hons). Part of this course was also spent at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. I am also a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE in Secondary Music from The University of Greenwich and Trinity College of Music.
What kind of experience do you have?
In addition to my own private tutoring, I have previously worked as a tutor for a music service and currently work part time as a music teacher in one of the country's top grammar schools. I am also an active musician and have considerable experience of performing in and directing various ensembles encompassing a variety of genres and styles. As a performer, I have played in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican, the Wigmore Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham, Glastonbury Festival, Cargo, St Mark's (Venice) and La Madeleine, Paris.
How much do you charge?
£25 per hour for instrumental tuition and £20 per hour for Music Theory/Exam preparation. Discounts are available for students who wish to pay upfront for a series of lessons and extra fees may apply if I need to spend a while traveling to your lesson.
Where do you teach?
I normally teach at home, but am happy to travel to students' homes if needed and is mutually convenient.
When are you available?
Mon - Thurs: after 5pm
Friday - Sun: all day
Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages and levels welcome!
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Whatever they want to do! My experience covers the ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall Grade Exams and the Edexcel specifications for GCSE and A Level. However if there is something else the student wishes to tackle, I will do my best to help them achieve this.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
GTC - General Teaching Council
ATL - Association of Teachers and Lecturers
CASS - Clarinet and Saxophone Society
Where and with whom did you train?
I studied with Julian Farrell and Dame Thea King at Guildhall and Vlastimil Mareš and Jiří Hlaváč at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Learning a instrument should be something fun and enjoyable and I always aim to make my lessons that way. Whatever your interests are or whatever you wish to achieve in your studies, I will do my best to help you do this!
