About Jaclyn

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been giving private singing lessons for seven years, varying through all ages and levels of ability from young beginners to coaching peers at university level, to working with adults who want to get into singing for fun. As a private peripatetic teacher I have taught students who want to sing for fun, work towards taking examinations, concerts, or work with students who are preparing for music college or university auditions.

I currently teach singing privately, at a school in Solihull, and at Stage Coach Solihull.

With these students this is a few things which I am currently covering -
music theory to help with overall musicianship
ABRSM exams from prep test to grade 8
Trinity musical theatre group and individual exams
Choirs and group singing lessons
Workshops including full musicals
individually tailored lessons to each pupils vocal style and preference.

At Bath Spa University in my final year I was vocal coach on a thesis piece (Spring awakening) for a performing arts graduate's final piece of work - for this I had to teach and then coach the individual members of the cast on all of their solos and chorus numbers, working as a teacher and with the MD and the Director.

I also have classroom teaching experience - GCSE and A-level lessons - during work experience placements - during this time I also gave individual and one-to-one singing lessons to BTEC students in preparation for their performance assessments. I have also worked in schools as a teaching assistant on music tours abroad, assisting with the teaching of music and then with the participation of the tour.

I consider myself a teacher who can adapt to the differing needs of a range of students, so if you are looking for lessons please feel free to get in touch.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at Trinity Laban conservatoire of music and dance with Lynton Atkinson and Robert Aldwinkle. Prior to this I studied at Bath Spa University with Judy Davis.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the ISM.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I am currently teaching a range of students from the Birmingham area varying from, young children who are just beginning to learn to sing and explore their voices. Teenagers wishing to take graded examinations in singing and musical theatre. University students who are furthering their technique and repertoire so that they can audition for music colleges/musical theatre courses in London, along with adults of all ages and abilities some of whom are singing for the first time since their school days to others who are experienced singers looking to improve upon technique and learn specific roles for performance.

Recent pupil achievements - Some of my students from a local school have recently taken their ABRSM grade one examinations and have all passed with flying colours. A pupil from Kings Heath has recently passed her grade 5 with a high distinction. Well done to all how took exams last term!

Student testimonials -

I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my lessons with Jackie. When I first started I thought the opportunity to master my voice had already gone, and that the best I could do was re-learn a bit of technique. Instead I have found the opposite. With Jackie's encouragement, I have been introduced to musical styles and pieces that I would never have attempted before, and I've loved exploring my vocal range (especially the high notes!). Jackie guided me through the ABRSM Grade 5 exam and I passed with Distinction, an achievement I could not have managed without Jackie's extensive knowledge and attention to detail. I feel very lucky to have been able to learn with such a patient and supportive teacher, and when I look back on my first lesson, I can't believe how far I have come! - Liz

What a difference a year makes. My singing lessons with Jackie have been amazing, after retiring I wanted to fulfill a dream and learn to sing. I had always been told I couldn't from a very early age, so I had to muster up all my confidence to make that first step. I didn't need to be afraid as Jackie was so friendly and encouraging and put me at ease. The lessons have been a joy each week, I have learnt so much, not only can I sing in tune, but my vocal range is extending all the time. Whether for a personal goal like myself or to sing in a more professional capacity, I couldn't recommend Jackie highly enough. Happy singing! - Diane
