About James

- What kind of experience do you have?

At the end of 2010 I performed my own Piano Concerto with a local chamber orchestra. Whilst at College I performed several recitals, both solo and with other performers, and in May last year I played Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 20 with the Oxford Chamber Orchestra. I have been composing for many years, mostly pieces for solo piano, one of which recently premiered in Japan. Recently I have composed works for piano and choir, piano and cello, as well as piano and string quartet.

I have taught piano to several students in London from as young as 4 years of age, totalling over 30 students. I have extensive experience teaching young beginners, as well as helping an adult student prepare for the ABRSM grade 8 exam. In total I have about 6 years of intermittent experience teaching piano, and at the Royal College of Music I attended seminars on "The Art of Teaching Piano". I applied to Blue Tutors last year, who awarded me the highest possible level on their teaching assessment.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Not yet, but I expect to apply for one in the near future.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Royal College of Music (2006 - 2010): I took piano as principal study under international pianist and teacher Niel Immelman, and took composition lessons with Dr. Jonathan Cole.

Wells Cathedral School (1997 - 2006): I studied piano with RCM professor John Byrne, performed in masterclasses taken by teachers from a number of UK institutions: Vanessa Latarche, Christopher Elton, Ruth Gerald, Mark Ray & Richard McMahon to give some examples. I was taught mathematics by some of the best mathematics teachers in the country, including one of Edexcels Chief Examiners.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a tutor with Blue Tutors.
