Personal Message
Hi, my name's James and I'm a freelance musician based in Cardiff. I have always had a passion for music and I love being able to pass on what I have learned over the last 10 years.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Piano and music theory. I have a large amount of experience within creative and improvisatory music so I am more than happy to tutor within jazz also.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a 2.1 B(mus) specialising in Jazz Saxophone from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama .
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching privately and in group sessions/masterclasses for the past 5 years for a number of different instruments. I have been a free lance musician since moving to Cardiff 5 years ago and have performance experience, of weddings, jazz gigs, professional shows and outreach work. I have a number of one on one pupils that I currently tutor individually and have teaching experience of individual lessons, teaching in schools, afterschool and holiday workshops and masterclasses, ensemble coaching and jazz improvisation classes.
How much do you charge?
I charge £12 for half an hour or £20 for an hour one on one. rates for other lessons times are negotiable. Rates for group lessons are reduced depending on the size of the group.
Where do you teach?
I teach primarily from my home in Cathays as this is where I have all my teaching resources, however, I am happy to travel to students homes providing it is a reasonable distance.
When are you available?
I teach weekly Tuesday to Friday afternoon and evenings and also on a Sunday.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I tailor my lessons to the pupil individually so am happy to teach people who just want to pick up some instrumental skills casually or will also take people down the route of ASBRSM and Guildhall examinations. I am happy to teach complete beginner or those or who have a large amount of instrumental experience and knowledge and have taught students ranging from age 5 to 50.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I teach graded examinations and music theory for those who wish to take examinations.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a music teacher at Forte School of Music in Cardiff.
Where and with whom did you train?
Forte School of Music
Tell me about some of your current students.
I currently have students ranging from complete beginner on Clarinet and Piano to Saxophone students who I have taken through ASBRSM grades and have a large amount of proficiency on there instruments. These students now play for pleasure and come to me to learn advanced techniques.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Learning a musical instrument is an excellent hobby as it teaches us so much about ourselves. It is also a great way to meet people and it has been proven that it makes you more intelligent.
