About Jonathan

- What kind of experience do you have?

For the most part, I have taught full-time English and English Literature at secondary school level since 1993. I have taught in a diverse range of schools, ranging from state comprehensives to independents in the private sector. I have a thorough understanding of the full secondary school age range, having taught from Years 7 to 13.

I have a lot of hands-on experience of the exam boards at GCSE/AS/A2 Level and am registered in the pool of examiners for AQA. I remain up to date with current ongoing changes in syllabuses and still work in schools on a part-time basis. In addition to school teaching I set up and my own franchised education/tuition centre, which I ran for 5 years. It catered for both primary and secondary aged students. At this point I gained some much valued first hand experience of teaching Key Stage 2 students. It also afforded an insight into the ways in which many KS 2 students simply slip through the net en-route to secondary school. Once there, all kinds of assumptions about competency in literacy are made, the consequence often being that basic building blocks remain unaddressed. Private tuition in cases such as this is advisable and can be very effective.

I returned to school teaching in 2008. I now work on a part-time basis in school and devote a considerable amount of my time to private tuition. I am often called in to both primary and secondary schools for agency work and have regular contact with both age ranges.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a current DBS certificate which is available for inspection. I also registered with the DBS for on-line verification from schools.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I gained a BA Hons Degree in Humanities from the University of Middlesex in 1984. This was a modular degree, the major focus of study being Literature. The remaining components of the degree were rooted in the 'History of Ideas' and Philosophy. I went into teaching in 1993, having studied at the University of London for my Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in the teaching of English at secondary school level. I also hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Hatfield.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £20 for the first lesson. This is a 'finding out about your child' session. It is a key opportunity for me to form a sense of where you child's strengths and areas for improvement lie. Prior to this first meeting, you will have shared your thinking with me about your child's needs in English. Following it, I will let you know what I have observed and we will be able to discuss the directions in which we might usefully go. Remaining lessons are then charged £30. Add 50% for additional students. (please see my website for details)

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Yes: 'Get back on the bus and look out of the window!' This initially odd sounding instruction embodies so much that I believe underpins success in English. Allow me to explain. Many of my older students will tell you that I often refer to 'the bus'. What on earth do I mean? Well it comes from a frequent observation - when I ask students to read a text in class (it could be an article, a poem, a short-story for example) I will often see them quickly busying themselves, reading from the beginning to the end, and then looking away awaiting the next instruction.

When I question them, they will often reply 'but I've read it'. At which point I often find myself saying 'but reading is not a one-way bus journey' - we don't get on at the start of the trip and simply step off when we get to our destination. We must learn to look out of the window and observe interesting things that are taking place in the world outside: we might peer into gardens, peek into shop windows, notice some intriguing looking people as they go about their business.

Successful reading is like this. We look for techniques, things that the writer has done to bring the journey to life. We might for example, see some interesting characterisation, a surprising metaphor, or a stunning passage of description. But we are unlikely to take it all in on the first reading. That's why we need to get back on that metaphorical bus, go back and take the journey in the opposite direction. Look at those things again, more closely. Study them. This time you'll see more. You should then do it again, because the more you look the more you will see. In other words, when you've got to the end of the piece, go back and read more closely. Make links and connections, look for the way in which the piece has been put together.

Learning to do this is the way to success in English. Your appreciation of what other writers have done, will feed into your own writing. You will not only become a better, more honed and focused reader, but you will be able to analyse, explain, and write yourself. As your English tutor, I see it as my job to get on that bus with you and help you see the richness that is English and Literature. Let's go!
