About Joseph

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am the low brass teacher at Cranleigh School in Surrey and Wellingborough School in Northamptonshire, as well as running a thriving private teaching studio. I have an excellent record in ABRSM exams, with all students to date achieving a merit pass or higher.

I am a member of the examining panel with ABRSM.

As a professional trombonist I am currently on trial for the principal trombone position with Scottish Opera, and have performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra as guest principal trombone, the BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, English Touring Opera and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia among many others.

As a pianist I have been employed as the official accompanist for Brent Music Service's exam sessions, and run a successful private teaching practice.

As an undergraduate and Masters student I fostered a strong interest in techniques of Western composition and music theory, and I have taught music theory with success since 2010.

I am also an active arranger and orchestrator- I had a series of works published by Resonata Music late in 2013 and am looking forward to collaborating with them again.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have full CRB disclosure from Cranleigh and Wellingborough Schools, and DBS disclosure from the ABRSM.

- Where and with whom did you train?

My undergraduate studies took place at King's College London, the pre-eminent institution for academic music at the time of my enrolment. My tutors there included David Trendell, Gareth Wilson and John Deathridge.

My graduate studies took place at the Royal Academy of Music, and my trombone teachers have included Kevin Price (former Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra), Dudley Bright (London Symphony Orchestra), Ian Bousfield (former Vienna Philharmonic), James Maynard (London Symphony Orchestra) and Matt Gee (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra).

My piano teacher from a very young age was the inspiring Jan Kingman AGSM.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Musician's Answering Service.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students include several complete beginners at Cranleigh School who are part of a programme I am running to increase the number of children in the Prep School having trombone and low brass lessons. I also have an adult student, highly successful in his own field, who loves to come for lessons and is progressing rapidly. Of course, I teach every age and ability in between, and several students have recently achieved high marks in ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exams, including a merit at Grade 8 and a merit at Grade 1 after just one term of learning.

I am an experienced, well-qualified music professional passionate about the importance of a rounded music education. I have recently moved to the Henley-on-Thames area and would love to hear from you about your music education queries.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

All brass instruments (except french horn), piano, and academic music up to undergraduate level.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold a first class music degree from King's College London and an MA from the Royal Academy of Music. I have also completed A Levels in Music (A), English Literature (A), Law (A) and AS French (A).

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35 per hour for all subjects except undergraduate music, for which I charge £40 to reflect the increased time spent preparing for lessons. This is inclusive of all lesson planning time. Travel costs will be payable to some areas outside the RG10 postcode area, but these are negotiable.

- Where do you teach?

I am willing to travel throughout the Berkshire area- Reading, Twyford, Wokingham, Bracknell, Maidenhead, Marlow and Windsor. Even if you are further afield do get in touch and we can discuss the options.

- When are you available?

I am able to teach flexibly as I have a self-employed schedule.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages from 6 upwards, and have great success with students into their 60s. A lot of my work at Cranleigh School is with very young players so feel comfortable teaching at this level.

I can teach the trombone up to music college undergraduate level and all other brass instruments up to ABRSM Grade 8. I can also teach the piano up to Grade 8 standard.

For academic music I am comfortable tutoring up to undergraduate level.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Learning an instrument or pursuing lessons in music theory is a highly personal undertaking and I try not to set timescales for examinations without the agreement of the individual student. That said, I have had great success in taking students through the ABRSM syllabuses, and have a thorough working knowledge of the requirements thanks to my training as an examiner. For this reason, the ABRSM is my preferred exam board for instrumental, practical musicianship, and theory exams.

For academic music I am familiar with the requirements for A-Level and am happy to tutor in preparation for university interviews as well.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I can provide advice via email as required, but believe there is no substitute for face to face tutoring.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

'Nobody forgets a good teacher' is the saying, and this is particularly relevant when learning a musical instrument. I believe my experience and love for my subject can help all my students achieve their potential. I look forward to hearing from you!
