Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Saxophone, Jazz Theory and Improvisation. I run regular monthly saxophone workshops in Levenshulme where students get to play arrangements and improvise together. I feel it is valuable to get playing with other people as soon as possible and students have set up their own bands and performance groups as a result.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Diploma in Music from University College Salford, a BA Hons in Performing Arts (Music) from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Grade 8 Piano and Grade 8 Music Theory.

What kind of experience do you have?
I worked for many years upon graduating as a freelance jazz saxophonist. I now play jazz piano and have been a singer/saxophonist in a signed band. I have extensive experience of big bands and arranging music for various groups. I produce music in my home studio and can produce cds of students performing which is a very beneficial learning experience.

How much do you charge?
I charge £10 per half hour, £20 per hour and workshops are £20 per sessions.

Where do you teach?
I teach from my home studio. It is 10 minutes walk from Levenshulme train station and a 5 minute walk from the 192 bus route on Stockport Road (A6). I am very accessible from Stockport, close to the Mcvities Factory.

When are you available?
I have a varied schedule. I teach some daytimes and Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 4pm and 9pm.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
Total beginners to advanced players, all ages welcome. I enjoy teaching all levels. I have a classical training on the piano and accompany both classical and jazz. I have experience of performing these genres, plus folk and blues. I have taught reggae/ska amongst many other genres and often transcribe and teach from recordings that students wish to bring in.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have had them in the past but have not found much need for them. Parents are welcome to stay in the lounge as I teach in the studio, and they can see and hear all that is happening. Parents bring their other children and have quite a nice time watching tv and having a cup of tea!

Do you have a personal message for students?
I aim for a relaxed atmosphere and mainly teach adults but am happy to teach younger students. I spend time tailoring lessons for each individual pupil, based on their musical aims. I also try and find opportunities for people to get playing with other people and having fun making music.

As I am a pianist you get a high level of accompaniment for learning improvisation, and the interaction with the other pupils at workshops increases learning and enjoyment. People have busy lives nowadays and I understand that everyone wants different things from learning a new instrument. I think adults appreciate that, and I can reassure you it is nothing like learning at school!

Essential Music Practice website

I found this website after being recommended it by one of my students, so thank you Alex from Jeddah. www.essential-music-practice.com I found the sections on 'Methods of Practising' to be very useful. It is really good to spell out your exact goals for each week, for each practice session....
