About Katie
- What kind of experience do you have?
With experience of teaching in both State and Independent schools over the last 6 years, I have taught a very wide range of students, from KS3 all the way through to A Level. As Key Stage 3 co-ordinator at a local independent secondary school, I have a thorough knowledge of the skills required at KS3 and interesting ways to teach these. I have also marked KS3 SATS and, of course taught many, many KS3 students within schools. With regards to GCSE and A Level, I have helped many students gain C at GCSE when they thought a D was out of reach, all the way up to helping A grade students boost up to A*. I have a good understanding of the iGCSE (Cambridge in particular) and have taught AS/ A Level students both coursework and exam elements.
I am also an Edexcel/ Pearson moderator for English Literarature GCSE controlled assessments.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up to date enhanced CRB check.
- Where and with whom did you train?
After gaining my degree in English Language and Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London at Egham, I took my PGCE at The University of Reading. I trained at schools in Basingstoke, Yateley and Reading. I have also taught in Farnborough and until last summer I taught at an independent school in Weybridge.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I can provide references on request - word counts and requests for anonymity on the web prevent me from uploading these fully here. Current students are studying for Cambridge iGCSE, AQA GCSE, Edexcel GCSE, AQA English Lit AS level and AQA English Language A Level, and Secondary School entrance exams, so I have a wide range of current experience!

I am an experienced secondary teacher who tutors students from Key Stage 3 up to GCSE. I've worked in both state and independent schools and have been privately tutoring for the past 3 years while I bring up my family.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
English Language and Literature KS3 general skills but I specialise in working with GCSE and iGCSE students.
I have tutored AS and A Level in the past, working as in a supportive role, troubleshooting and supporting students as they progress through their course, rather than 'teaching' texts, which vary widely from course to course.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
PGCE Secondary English BA Hons 2:1 in English Literature and Language A Levels in English Literature, Geography and Art 11 GCSEs
- How much do you charge?
I am happy to offer discounts for block bookings in advance. Unfortunately due to the high cost of fuel and the time spent on the road, I do have to charge extra for travel over 6 miles from Yateley, but will discuss this on an individual basis. Call me to talk through your individual requirements.
- Where do you teach?
I can tutor at home, but am happy to travel to students homes by arrangement (see above). Towns nearby include Yateley, Eversley, Fleet, Camberley, Sandhurst, Crowthorne, Arborfield, Farnborough, Hawley, Mytchett, Finchampstead.
- When are you available?
I tutor after school during the week and into the evening. I am also available during school holidays and in some cases may be able to tutor during the day in the week.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Ages 11-18
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Tutoring online is by Skype and email. I currently have 2 students who I tutor online and it has proved very effective for them. Tutoring online is not for everyone, but it really does suit some students who live that bit too far away to travel to. Some students also prefer that bit of distance that online tutoring provides. I like to meet my online students face to face initially to discuss requirements and so that we know each other, and so I can meet parents before we start. I endeavour to ensure that I give the same attention in an hour online that I would give face to face. I email worksheets to be printed off before the session and we take advantage of the 'share screen' facility on Skype to share work as it is written, images, websites etc while we are talking. I can set homework if required, which can then be emailed to me during the week for discussion at our next session.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am an approachable and practical tutor who enjoys helping all students to achieve the very best they can. Whether you need help with exam preparation and revision, basic skills, grammar, creative writing, analysing fiction and non-fiction or essay writing, I am able to tailor lessons to suit you and enable you to achieve. I have worked with students who thought they'd never pass their 'English', and many others who just needed help to crack a particular skill. As an English Teacher I have a wide range of recent, relevant experience and look forward to talking to you about how I can help you out.

My son needed some support how to analyse, compare and contrast GCSE poetry. Katie put together a ten week programme. These sessions gave my son so much more confidence, enabled him to look beyond the obvious in the poems and compare and contrast in a structured way. My son found Katie very easy to learn from and I would not hesitate in recommending her as a tutor.
I took my daughter to see Katie for 12 consecutive, 1hour tutor sessions over the winter as we thought that she was struggling with her English coming up to her GCSE exams in 2013. She was not overly interested in the concept, but Katie's personality and warm teaching style meant that she looked forward to her Monday classes and has gained a clear insight into the areas on which she needs to focus in order to improve her grades.
By email: "Ollie is really appreciative of the help you gave him last year (as am I). Once again, many thanks for your help. It's been invaluable. I can't tell you how delighted I was that the Skype thing worked so well. It made it very personal and therefore acceptable to Ollie.
