About Leon

- What kind of experience do you have?

From 2009-2011 I taught Drumkit to students aged between 10-15 at a local Rock & Pop School. I've also been involved in a number of music courses for children between 2009-2014 as a Supervisor / Sound Technician. I currently have four Piano pupils aged 5-14.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No, but I am willing to obtain this document at a tutees' request.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I began Composition lessons at Sixth Form with Darren Bloom. Since then I have taken lessons from internationally renowned composers Richard Causton, Edwin Roxburgh, Ed Bennett, Joe Cutler and Howard Skempton. I have also been involved in masterclasses with Mario Garuti, Colin Matthews and Richard Ayres.
I have taken Bassoon lessons from Adam Mackenzie (New London Chamber Ensemble) and John Orford (London Sinfonietta).

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently have six Piano students aged between 5-13.

My philosophy in Music Tuition is to improve the student's technique through exercises and pieces which they enjoy. Increasing their passion for music will increase their motivation for practice and improvement.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach composition, music theory, bassoon and piano. In composition I am comfortable teaching a range of styles including classical, film music and dance/electronic music. I use Sibelius 7 and Logic Pro X and can teach students how to use these programmes effectively. For bassoon and piano, I teach mainly classical but can also offer free improvisation lessons. I am also happy to give guidance for GCSE/A-Level Music & Music Technology school exams and coursework.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

In 2015 I achieved a high Second Class Honours: First Degree in Bmus Composition at Birmingham Conservatoire.. I completed my Grade 8 Bassoon with Distinction in 2010, Grade 7 Piano in 2009 and Grade 5 Music Theory in 2007.

- How much do you charge?

Composition + Music Theory Classes are £30 per hour. Bassoon + Piano Classes are £25 per hour. An extra £5 is added for journeys over half an hour's drive away. I am able to offer discounts for group classes, please contact for more details.

- Where do you teach?

I am able to offer lessons from my home near Hertford, and also travel to students. I can travel to: Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Ware, Hertford, Bayford, Cheshunt, Harlow, Hoddesdon and Potters Bar. Please contact me if you are nearby but your area is not listed, and I will get back you with whether or not I am able to travel to you.

- When are you available?

I am available at most times except for Tuesday after 3:30pm and Thursday between 5:30-6:45. I am happy to continue teaching through school holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I have taught piano to pupils as young as 4 years old. Generally around 6 years old is a better age to start piano, but a child with a keen interest can start earlier.
10 years old is a good age to start the bassoon, and it is difficult to start any earlier due to the size of the instrument.
Composition lessons would be best for students over the age of 13 as they first have to develop an awareness of modern music and think about how to find their own musical language.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare my students for Trinity and ABRSM exams according to their preference. I am also happy to work through the GCSE/A-Level school syllabus with pupils.
Composition: Beginner-Expert
Music Theory: Grades 1-8
Bassoon: Grades 1-6
Piano: Grades 1-4
