Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Drums.
My main focus is to give my students a solid foundation at their instrument, which then allows them to explore and study the musical styles and techniques they’re interested in, with ease and confidence.

Some of the problem-solving areas are:

- Technique studies based on the Moeller and Gladstone principles
- Time playing, independence and coordination studies through different musical styles: Jazz, Rock, Fusion, Funk.
- Drumset ergonomics: Relaxation; Posture; Balance; Flow
- Learning how to be comfortable playing with a click track/metronome

Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated in 2006 at the University for Music and Dramatic Arts Graz, Austria with a MMus in Jazz Drums and Percussion Performance.

What kind of experience do you have?
I’m active as a private tutor since 2001.
I had the pleasure to be invited to give master classes in Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.

I taught drums and basic musical skills, for a period of ten months, to young adults and children with behavioral and social disorders at the Young Offenders Institution in Pula, Croatia.
This experience made me realize how important it is to create a friendly and relaxed environment for the pupils, allowing them to learn and express themselves through the instrument with ease, while having fun.

As a performer I worked with a great number of international artists in Pop, Rock, Jazz and Experimental music.
Toured across UK, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia…
I also performed with theater productions in Italy, Austria and Croatia and recorded a film score for the prize winning Italian film “Se chiudi gli occhi”(Grand Prix – Jury of the Annency Festival)
I gained a lot of experience as a studio session-drummer as well, recording 15 albums to this day.

How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour (plus travel expenses if teaching at the pupils premises).
50% discount on the first, introductionary lesson.

Where do you teach?
I teach in a fully equipped practice studio based in Elephant and Castle.

When are you available?
I am quite flexible regarding availability. To be arranged directly with the pupil.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages welcome, from beginners to advanced.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I'm a member of the Musicians Union.

Where and with whom did you train?
During my studies at University my mentors were Alex Deutch, Manfred Josel and Howard T. Curtis.
I attended clinics and learned from some of the most renowned drummers in the business, such as Jimmy Cobb, Joe La Barbera, Billy Hart, Bill Elgart and John Hollenback.

Do you have a personal message for students?
Don’t get frustrated if you’re not able to play the way you would love to, or if you feel uncomfortable at your instrument because you got to the point where you don’t seem to be doing any progress at all.
Each and everyone of your favorite drummers has been there, hitting that wall, but they are still playing and enjoying each and every note, because it's a natural process, and fortunately there are various “tools” and techniques that allow us to overcome those challenges, taking us to the next level.

The most important thing is to never give up, because music is there to be enjoyed, and your instrument is your tool to create that great music.

So give me a call, and I’ll teach you a lot of creative concepts and techniques that will enhance your playing, sound, dexterity and confidence on the drums.

Keep on groovin’

Being Proficient in Different Musical Styles

The key in becoming a versatile musician and being proficient in more than just one musical style, is to simply “listen”. By listening I mean understanding what makes those musicians sound the way they do. Than research, study the history and try to play the genres you are really interested in...
