Personal Message

Hello - welcome to my little bit on The Tutor Pages. I am looking forward to meeting you, as a student, be it beginner or advanced, for some fun times ahead!

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
Saxophones, soprano, alto and tenor. I did train classically, so can also teach classical sax, but, well......I don't think it is a classical instrument. However, if that is what you want to do, then count me in!

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have been teaching the instrument in schools as well as privately for about 15 years. Grade 8 accomplished. Instead of a music degree, I took History and Politics. I studied at Christchurch (NZ) Polytechnic School of Jazz for one year.

What kind of experience do you have?
15 years teaching, school and privately. My teacher and Master was/is John O'Neill, whose saxophone method is a worldwide bestseller. I guess my teaching technique is probably his.... I am a professional player, and have made a couple of commercial CDs.

How much do you charge?
GBP20/hr. However, I am not going to turn you away due to financial hardship.

Where do you teach?
I teach at home in Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight, but am prepared to travel to you - anywhere on the Island - for an extra (small) cost.

When are you available?
Flexible times.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
Teenager upwards. Adults very welcome. My oldest student is in their 50s.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes - enhanced.

Do you have a personal message for students?
My approach to learning the saxophone is quite a strict one. Tone, tone, tone....we learn to read music, to sing, and to clap, and to push our comfort zone at most opportunities, so as improving improvisation and aural (ear) skills.

The Learning Journey

I often tell my students to be on the look out for psychological 'stuff' coming at them when they are learning the sax. Learning something that is so breath oriented (i.e. from the centre of most people's being) can challenge more than you thought! I am acutely aware of how self-esteem,...

Student Testimonials
"Never having music lessons before, and deciding at the age of 35 to take up the alto sax, Mark has been an excellent teacher. From ground work music theory, to enjoying playing pieces that I know, Mark's style, enthusiasm and his method of using duets to teach the basics, has made lessons straightforward and enjoyable. After 6 months of being taught by Mark I defiantly have the saxophone bug." - Ross Coyle
"As a mature and complete novice I can only recommend Mark as an excellent Saxophone tutor. Mark very quickly helped me to stop my saxophone sounding like a strangled duck and is always very patient even when I fail to count properly. You will be expected to work hard and practise, but if you follow Mark's guidance you will be rewarded." - Karen Stephenson
