- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Violin, Drum Kit, Viola and Percussion.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- Grade 8 on the violin and drums. I studied the violin at Junior Royal Academy of Music (Scholarship) and then Royal Northern College of Music (Scholarship) on a Bmus course. I am also currently studying Drum Kit in my final year at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance on a Bmus course.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- Playing experience- Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Hammersmith Apollo (w/ Amy MacDonald), Glastonbury Other Stage (w/ Elbow), Secret Garden Party, La Scala, London Underworld, Henley Festival, Holders Festival Barbados, Brisbane Festival, Purmerend Festival Norway, and I play regularly in Covent Garden.
Teaching experiece- I have taught the violin and the drums privately at my home in Crystal Palace for the last 3 years, and my pupils have had pupils ranging from 7 to 14 years old.
I studied the Suzuki method (violin) when I first started learning, so I use some of the techniques that this offers, including games and rhymes to make learning more fun. I also use clapping games and rhythmic exercises to help general musicianship and make learning the drums a less daunting task, since it can be a fairly scary instrument to start learning for a child!
For more advanced drummers, I specialize in teaching double-kick patterns and advanced hand techniques.
I have also occasionally taken chamber music groups for rehearsals when I was at high school and on summer music courses. - How much do you charge?
- I charge £30 per hour for all instruments, and £20 half-hour lessons, which can be more suitable for younger children. Travelling may incur some small travel expenses depending on where I am going!
- Where do you teach?
- At my home in Crystal Palace, or at students' homes. Nearby towns are; Norwood, Penge, Anerly, Brockley, New Cross Gate, Sydenham, Forest Hill, Dulwich, Peckham, Central London, West London, South London, South East London, East Croydon, South Croydon
- When are you available?
- My lesson days/times are flexible. I teach during the week and on the weekends, particularly on Sundays. I also teach after school hours and in the evenings for more mature students that work 9-5 hours.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- Any age, any level, from 5 years old upwards!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- All grades on all the instruments I play.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
- Junior Royal Academy of Music- Ben Wragg (violin)
Royal Northern College of Music- Jan Repko and Eyal Kless (violin)
Privately with David Webster (drums)
Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (Darren Ashford, Justin Scott, Neil Martin) - Do you have a personal message for students?
- I gig fairly regularly all year round, and I belong to 3 different original bands and groups. Please feel free to check these out to listen to the music or watch the videos.
My first group is called 'Bowjangles', and we are a string quartet with a difference! We all play, sing and dance at the same time. We have been invited to play at Glastonbury and Secret Garden Party for the last 3 years and have gigged all over the world. You can check us out on www.bowjangles.org
My second group is a metal band I formed 3 years ago called 'Karybdis'. Metal is my favourite genre of music to drum, and we have recently had a lot of very exciting things happening, as well as recording our first ever music video which you can check out on www.myspace.com/karybdisband
My third original group is a pop/rock group called 'Me and the Mountain'. I usually play drums, but also play violin at some of our accoustic gigs. We also have a music video, and the group is picking up speed very quickly and getting a lot of attention. Www.myspace.com/meandthemountain
I also play in a string quartet and string sextet, since chamber music has always been a passion of mine!
I am a working musician, so if you are looking to learn an instrument with the goal of gigging yourself or forming your own band or group, I am happy to help out in any way I can.

Understanding 'Groove'
Since deciding to take up the Drums to a Professional Standard 5 years ago, the words 'Groove' and 'Pocket' have become incredibly common. In my experience, the feel of 'Groove' is not one that can be taught, but appears once the necessary technique has been learnt, and only through live gigging experience and studio work. One of the best...
