About Peter
- What kind of experience do you have?
I've been tutoring for the past 3 years and so far I've clocked over 200 hours of 1 to 1 tuition. I also have experience tutoring groups of students and supervising undergraduates during their chemistry lab experiments. I've tutored chemistry at A-level using AQA, OCR and Edexcel syllabus' in addition to tutoring IB chemistry and university level chemistry (at 1st, 2nd and 3rd year levels).
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Over my time as a tutor I've had 2 DBS checks. The first was 3 years ago when I started tutoring and the second was earlier this year (with a mind to starting sports coaching).
- Where and with whom did you train?
In regards to tutoring I am self trained although through my degrees I have had extensive chemistry training including some teaching training prior to tutoring for the university.

I am an experienced tutor with a broad knowledge of chemistry. This allows me to be versatile in my tutoring style - I can adapt to the needs of different students and I know how to make sure the the subject is understood.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Mainly chemistry (anything from GCSE to university level). However I can also teach physics and maths and can cover some aspects of biology. I can comfortably tutor GCSE maths, physics and science.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a masters (MChem) in chemistry from the University of St Andrews and another masters (MRes) in chemical biology from Imperial College London. I'm also in the process of writing up my PhD thesis (again at Imperial College).
- How much do you charge?
My standard rate is £45 per hour but I base this on the assumption that I have to travel a long way for a 1 hour lesson. If you live close or are willing to book more than an hour at a time I may be able to reduce my fees. For group lessons I charge the same rate for my time regardless of the size of the group. Although the largest group I've ever tutored has been 7 (as part of my duties as a PhD student at Imperial).
- Where do you teach?
I generally travel to the homes of my tutees but I have also met tutees at a mutually convenient location (in the past coffee shops and libraries have worked best). I have also given tutorials via Skype in the past and I am open to hosting tutorials in my own flat. In the past I've travelled to Wimbledon, Maida Vale and Ealing - I consider all these to be within reasonable travel distance for me.
- When are you available?
I've started writing up my thesis now so for the next couple of months (until the end of November 2015) I have availability at any time. Beyond that I generally have availability in the evenings and at weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Most of my tutees have been between the ages of 16 and 24 but I don't have any problem tutoring younger (or older) children. I am DBS checked and I have attended a course regarding the safeguarding of children - although this was more from a sports coaching angle.
