I have been a private tutor for more than 7 years and am particularly skilled in tailoring lessons to the specific requirements of each individual student.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I specialise in teaching Philosophy at university level. I am currently working towards a doctoral degree myself at the University of Oxford. In my undergraduate studies I took German Language & Literature as a second major. My native language is German and I enjoy teaching conversational skills and German Literature, as well as elementary grammar at beginners level. Being a published author, I am furthermore happy to advise on writing skills as well as study skills more generally.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied Philosophy and German Langauge & Literature for a BA (double major) at the University of Göttingen (Germany), where I graduated with first honours, at the top of my class. Afterwards I spent one year on a EU-funded research fellowship at the University of Bergen (Norway). Then MPhilStud in Philosophy at the University of London, from 2011. Since April 2014 studying for doctoral degree (DPhil) in Philosophy at the Unviversity of Oxford.
- How much do you charge?
My standard rate is £25 per hour. I offer reduced consultation lessons and group discounts.
- Where do you teach?
I am based in the centre of Oxford (OX1). I am happy to teach at home as well as to travel to students' homes or to meet elsewhere, within central Oxford and surrounding areas:
Blackbird Leys, Cowley, Cutteslowe, Headington, Jericho, North Oxford, Park Town, Norham Manor, Walton Manor, Osney, Summertown, Sunnymead, Wolvercote.
During certain periods of the year (usually most of term time) I also travel to London one day per week, teaching in west London mainly:
Bayswater, Kensington, Notting Hill, Shepherd's Bush.
- When are you available?
I am rather flexible.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and levels.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I regularly tutor via Skype and am happy to provide feedback via email.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Conversation and writing form the central ingredients of every philosophical education, and something very similar holds true of learning a foreign language. Understanding shows itself in the clear and spontaneous expression of the relevant concepts. Written and oral exercise are of equally great importance. I encourage my students to send me a piece of written work (however short) prior to our meetings. This procedure assists the student in thoroughly reflecting their own understanding, as well as the tutor in tailoring their lessons to the student's individual needs and interests, and thus both of them in their joint achievement of the student's wished-for mastery of the relevant skills and materials.
