About Kate
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have had a variety of students aged 5 upwards, with plenty of experience working with children.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Not at present.
- What kind of experience do you have?
My teaching experience began 15 years ago and with the influence of some incredible pedagogical tuition at the RNCM and my own interests in human creativity and musicianship it has developed from there.
I find that from the age of 6 upwards children gain confidence with one-to-one tuition and an introduction to instrumental lessons.
I also really enjoy working with adults and focusing on their very different musical goals and ambitions.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the ISM.

Learning is fun, music is fun and I enjoy teaching beginners and intermediate pianists.
Focus can be put towards exam, personal goals and ambitions or we can just have fun working through different styles.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Piano - all styles of music with constant attention to developing skills, musical ability and reading music with confidence.

I studied piano at the Royal Northern College of Music where I also benefited from pedagogy and conducting courses and education projects with all ages and levels of ability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Age 5 upwards, beginners and intermediate.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am happy to prepare for ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall exams, however this is optional.
Music is great fun and deeply rewarding at every level.
Musicianship, creativity and method are the three key factors in all of my teaching, through which I serve to bring my pupils greater enjoyment, self-expression and musical understanding.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Piano, violin, musicianship and theory, in no particular order.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied at the Royal Northern College of Music where I gained a BMus (Hons) with Piano as my instrument.
I also gained Grade 8 in Violin and Grade 6 in Oboe.
- How much do you charge?
Base rate £32 per hour for all tuition in Ealing.
I charge £16 per hour for the first lesson.
I charge higher fees for lessons outside of Ealing.
My rates will be subject to a modest increase from January 2018.
- Where do you teach?
At students' homes in Ealing
- When are you available?
I teach full time so feel free to contact me about lessons at any time or day. My weeks off are governed mostly by the school year.
I perform approximately six times a year but this takes over an afternoon and evening at a time, nothing longer.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Age 6 and upwards for instrumental lessons on a one-to-one basis
Age 6 and upwards for musicianship lessons
Age 11 and upwards for Theory- only tuition
There is no maximum age. I like to teach children and adults of all ages and it's never too late to give music a try for the first, second or twentieth time.
Piano up to Grade 8.
Violin up to Grade 3
Theory up to Grade 5
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM Practical and Theory exams.
Music Exams can be a fantastic tool to help a pupil to focus their skill and further their progress. These exams are, however, a means and not the end. They are certainly not compulsory.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Music is all about creativity, expression, mutual understanding and enjoyment.
Developing musicianship is wonderful for many other reasons and there are some fantastic scientists and education specialists who can prove all the incredible benefits music brings to our health and success elsewhere. First and foremost however, Music is all about creativity, expression, understanding and enjoyment; as humans, we need that.
Your musical ear is a part of you and can always be developed.
From that you can learn to use a musical instrument to express yourself through improvisation and through interpretation of great works. That's what I am here to help you do. If you learn to play the piano or violin with me I can teach you where to put your arms, your fingers, your feet and your eyes, but most of all I can teach you how to hear music internally, read it, understand it.... and then how to play it and enjoy it.
