About Ryoko
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have over 10 years of teaching experience: I have taught students of all levels: from beginners (both children and adults) to advanced students. I have gotten more than 15 students through ABRSM exams and they got distinction/merit.
I also perform as a soloist and accompanist regularly as I believe teachers should keep performing so that they can inspire their students.
I have been studying the Alexander Technique for 8 years both in Japan and UK and I use Alexander Technique in my playing and introduce it to my pupils. Using Alexander Technique allows you to connect your instrument and music more deeply and let yourself express truly. It also helps you learn in a way that is healthy for your body, easy and comfortable.
I am a director of Music as a Whole (Music school teaching based on Alexander Technique for children & Adults) where I teach Alexander Technique and Instrumental lessons combined so that students can benefit from both lessons. (concealed information)
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an enhanced DBS Certificate and Certificate of teaching music which is the equivalent to a PGCS from the Ministry of education in Japan.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I started learning piano when I was 7 years old. Since I was a child, I loved dancing and singing!
During my undergraduate study, I developed RSI and it was hard time for me. Then I found Alexander Technique is good for musicians especially who is suffering physical problem so I started learning Alexander Technique after graduating. I cured RSI which I was suffering for 6 years but also I developed piano technique and musicality fundamentally. I found I don't have to force or make music to sing- music itself wants to sing- what we need is just releasing it. I came to be able feel music and composers much closer through my musical experience. And I realised that I have a lot of potential which I hadn't noticed that I have.
I moved to London on 2010 and studied with Peter Bithell and Nelly Ben-or who is a senior Alexander Technique teacher at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I'm continuing the journey of playing piano using Alexander Technique as it always reveals new possibilities towards releasing true potential in order to be in music.
Now I'm studying Alexander technique in teacher training course with John Hunter and Dorothea Magonet and I'm going to qualify this summer 2013 by StAT.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I'm a member of Incorporate society of musicians (ISM) and the society of teachers of the Alexander Technique(STAT)
- Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my most current students is a total beginner but really keen to learn playing music! It's fun to work with with her because I always get inspired by how she enjoys becoming able to play new pieces. It makes me remember the pure joy of playing music!
Another student is a 6 year old girl who likes playing pieces of Bach and Prokofiev and Kabalevsky for children. We started learning together one year ago, and I've been amazed by her progress! Young children learn so quickly! We enjoy singing and playing rhythm games as well.
Other students include a teenager who is considering applying to music college - they are similar to me, and I would like to encourage and support them as much as I can! And of course, we get on really well!

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I highly recommend Ryoko as a piano teacher. Her teaching method is fun, but at the same time very professional. She is patient and doesn't mind explaining until I get it right – even if it takes multiple lessons! I chose a teacher, because I wanted to be able to play piano with the correct technique.
Having Ryoko as my teacher is so much fun and as a bonus she teaches using the Alexander Technique, which I find very helpful. It really does open one's mind, so you can play from the soul and thus better.
I'm not especially interested in exams as this is purely a hobby for me. I am however learning to read notes and I'm working towards being able to compose my own music. Royoko is very flexible in her lessons and will help you achieve what you want to achieve.
We have been extremely pleased with the progress our 8 year old son has made with his piano. He enjoys the lessons including the AT part and he is coming on in leaps and bounds with his playing and his posture while playing .
Our two sons have had piano lessons with Ryoko for the last 12 months. In this time they have developed both technically and musically. Each child is a different personality and we appreciate the way Ryoko adapts her style to help them learn, enjoy the music and grow in confidence. They both look forward to their weekly lessons and having the lessons in our home makes arrangements much easier. We are very pleased with how the boys' music making has developed.
Ryoko Izutsu has been a wonderful teacher to my daughter for some time . She has instilled a diligent practice ethic and encouraged an excellent musicality in my daughter's approach to the Piano. I have no hesitation in recommending Ryoko to others.
After just a few lessons with Ryoko the quality of my playing was transformed through using the Alexander Technique approach. I found being able to play with less tension in my body resulted in my being able to be more expressive and the sound I made was warmer and richer. Ryoko's style of teaching is so enjoyable and great fun. My lessons are more about 'playing' and focusing on communication and expression rather than merely 'practicing'.
What impresses me most about Ryoko is her firm understanding and love of the Alexander Technique, which she has incorporated into all aspects of her lifestyle particularly her music - an excellent practitioner.
