- Personal Message
- I am 21 and study Physics and Music at Imperial College and the Royal College of Music. My unique degree has allowed me the expertise to teach Physics, Maths and Music to a high standard.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I am able and willing to teach Trombone up to an advanced level, Physics, Maths and Music up to A-level and Science up to GCSE.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I am currently in my final year studying for a BSs Physics and Music at Imperial College and the Royal College of Music. Previously I gained four As at A-level in Physics, Music, Maths and Further Maths and five A*s, five As and two Bs at GCSE. I also gained my Grade VIII Trombone with distinction at 15.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I currently tutor in and around Fulham and have spent time at college on educational study. Teaching generally comes in two stages - identifying a problem and then fixing it - and for this I will use my knowledge of the subjects I have studied and my experience both as a tutor and a student.
- How much do you charge?
- My base rate is £25 per hour or £15 for a half hour. If a lesson takes slightly longer than expected I will not ask for any more than this.
- Where do you teach?
- I am happy to tutor from home or at the students home depending on the individual situation. For academic lessons I can teach at either the tutee or my house or meet at a public place e.g. coffee shop, library. For trombone lessons I can only teach at my house during the weekdays while my neighbours are out which unfortunately is school time for most students. There is generally a window between 4pm and 6pm when trombone tuition will not annoy my neighbours and students are free. My primary area for tuition is around Kensington, Fulham and Hammersmith but am happy to travel to areas surrounding this.
- When are you available?
- My timetable tends to be very flexible. Once college term starts I have commitments which are mostly regular and so a usual weekly time can be arranged in most cases. I am happy to tutor throughout the week and at weekends as follows:
Monday and Friday afternoon/evenings.
Tuesday and Wednesday 3-6
Saturday and Sunday throughout the day. - Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach standard school levels of GCSEs and A-Levels and ABRSM Graded Trombone levels up to Grade VIII and beyond. In my academic subjects I prefer to teach people who are 11+ as they tend to be more receptive to tuition when compared to younger children. The lowest age I will teach trombone is 8 as a certain physical strength is needed to begin learning the instrument correctly.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- No. I have never worked for an organisation which requires a CRB check and hence have not had to be checked. I can say that I have no criminal record and hence can see no reason why I would not pass a CRB check if I was checked.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I do not have webcam or skype access but my email is available at all times for questions.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Institute of Physics
- Where and with whom did you train?
- On trombone, which I started learning myself in 1999, I have studied with Chris Houlding privately (05-08) (Vice Chair, International Trombone Association) and with Graham Lee (08- ), Roger Harvey (09-11) (Principal Trombone, BBC Symphony Orchestra) and Lindsay Shilling (11- ) (Principal Trombone, Royal Opera House) at the Royal College of Music. I have studied Physics at Imperial College London since 2008 and studied for A-levels and GCSEs in Maths and Science based subjects. Throughout my time at Imperial I have studied under many tutors including Dr Benjamin Sauer, Dr Arnaud Czaja, Dr Xuhua Wang, Professor Stephen Warren and Professor Richard Thompson and was under the direction of Senior Tutor Professor Raymond Murray.

Structuring Practice to Avoid Stamina Problems
One of the things blighting brass player practice is probably the oldest problem brass players have ever faced, how to practise adequately when stamina is such an issue on the instrument. This is particularly an issue if you are aiming to increase your range upwards or learn advanced techniques in the upper register like lip trills. As we all...
