About Sami
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have participated in many orchestras, such as City of Birmingham Youth Orchestra, Amadeus Orchestra and British Police Symphony Orchestra. I am an active freelance musician, performing in the UK, and Europe frequently. I have performed in ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, International Baroque Players, Amade Players and am a member of La Banda Ariosa.
I have experience teaching from ages 7-75 in oboe, clarinet, piano, reed making and English.
I am an advanced oboe reed maker and able to sell to students for a discounted price.

I am a fun and encouraging teacher. I expect pupils to work hard at their own rate. I am very flexible in teaching and able to adapt to each individual's needs. I am a warm and inviting person and very easy to interact with.

- Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire, studying under Richard Weigall, Jenni Philips and George Caird with a 2:1 honours degree in Music. As a baroque oboist I have studied with Gail Hennessy and Frank De Bruine at Birmingham Conservatoire and Den Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. I have also studied recorder with Daniel Brüggen. I also have a certificate from NAMIR enabling me to be recognised as a trained woodwind repairer.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 an hour, providing travel is within zones 1-4 of London, otherwise I charge £35 for travel to greater London. The price of oboe reeds will vary on the type of instrument it is being made for.
- Where do you teach?
I am extremely flexible and can travel to outer London.
- When are you available?
I am available most weekdays and weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am able to teach any age up to grade 8 in oboe and grade 5 in all other woodwind instruments.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I use Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music graded exams 1-8. Prep exams also, depending on level and ability of student.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Online tutoring can be done over Skype, however the practical teaching of an instrument will be much more efficient in person.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I will expect you to practise outside the lessons. I will prepare a sheet of homework exercises after each lesson for you to work on. You can choose to prepare music you like and we can work on this in the lessons. I would expect a student to have at least a 30 minute lesson a week, and an hour is preferable, as much more can be achieved in this time.
