About my career as a performing mezzo soprano (you can always find the most up to date performance information on my website):
Canadian mezzo Sarah Champion studied trumpet and voice at McGill University and trained at the Royal College of Music. Formerly a soprano, she now specialises in the Zwischenfach repertoire and studies with Nelly Miricioiu in London. Sarah is a former Britten-Pears Young Artist and a Malcolm Martineau Crear Scholar.
Sarah's opera engagements have included The Lover in Tansy Davies' Between Worlds directed by Deborah Warner for English National Opera; Dorabella Così fan Tutte for Scottish Opera's small scale tour; Dorotea Stiffelio for Chelsea Opera Group and Zenobia Radamisto at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico. Amongst her repertoire are Angelina La Cenerentola and the title role of Handel Xerxes. She is a member of the Core Company of Opera Erratica, an incubator of innovative projects.
Sarah has performed as a soloist and recitalist throughout North America, the UK and Europe giving performances with Florilegium, the Britten-Pears Orchestra /Antonello Manacorda, Britten-Pears Baroque Orchestra/Richard Egarr, the San Francisco Early Music Society, at the London Handel Festival, the Tage Alte Musik Regensburg, the Boston Early Music Festival, Festival Montreal Baroque, the Banff Centre and the Aldeburgh Festival. Notable engagements include recitals with the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada under Trevor Pinnock, the Little Baroque Company under Laurence Cummings and a staging of Messiaen's song cycle Harawi for the American Opera Theater.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
I have a Masters of Music in Advanced Vocal Performance (Distinction) from the Royal College of Music in London, a Licentiate of Music in Vocal Performance (Outstanding Distinction) from McGill University in Canada, and a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance (High Distinction) also from McGill University in Canada.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students range from nine years old to seventy years old, and have a very wide range of abilities and interests. Some are complete beginners while others have their own performing careers underway (and everything in between, of course!). I always teach my students using music that they enjoy, whether it be classical, jazz, musical theatre or pop music. I strongly believe in developing basic musicianship skills with all my students and some time is spent in lessons on learning to read music, sight singing, and aural training.

Learn to sing in fun and healthy way with an experienced professional singer! All ages and levels are welcome.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach singing to all ages and all levels. Although my specialty is classical music, I am happy to work on any style of music (musical theatre, classical, pop) with my students. The goal is to learn to sing in a healthy way, to use your voice to its full potential, and to have fun!
I also teach musicianship, aural training and sight reading skills (to singers and other instrumentalists), and provide one to one tution of academic music subjects, including ABRSM theory exams, GCSE and A Level music.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a classically trained mezzo soprano with over ten years of professional performance experience in the United Kingdom and abroad. I have a Masters of Music in Advanced Vocal Performance (Distinction) from the Royal College of Music as well as a Licentiate of Music (Outstanding Distinction) and a Bachelor of Music (Distinction) both from McGill University in Canada. I also have eight years of private teaching experience.

- Where do you teach?
I usually teach in my home in Chesham, a short walk from the Chesham Metropolitan Line station. I am within easy reach of Amersham, High Wycombe, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and many other parts of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. I do sometimes travel to students, although this can be more difficult to arrange.
- When are you available?
I am currently accepting new students throughout the week - please get in touch if you would like more information.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages from children to adults. However, I generally will not take students under the age of nine or ten. This can depend on the child and I will look at it on a case by case basis. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss lessons for a younger child.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I help many students prepare for ABRSM exams.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Singing is great fun! Many people think about singing lessons but are too shy or think they aren't good enough. To those people, I say: Come try it out! Everyone can learn to sing!

A family joke was I couldn't hold a tune in a bucket. So I decided on lessons and found Sarah via the web. As an absolute beginner, In my 60s, I was very nervous to start with but Sarah's relaxed , friendly style put me at ease. The lessons are challenging but fun and six months on I can sing several songs, mostly in tune. Even my biggest critic (My Wife) can hear a huge improvement.
Sarah is really friendly and has years of experience in the music industry as well as a really good knowledge of languages, musical style and performance technique. Having studied singing at University level I was very fussy about who I wanted to work with and I am very happy with Sarah.
Sarah is patient, expert and fun. As an adult learner, I have much appreciated her careful approach to ensuring that I make progress. Her lessons are enjoyable, too! (and she is an amazing singer)
Sarah is an experienced tutor, well used to working with students of all ages and all levels of ability. She is particularly good at designing lessons which tailor her teaching methods to your interests and skills.
Sarah has been an incredible teacher for my daughter. She is passionate with her work and engages really well with my daughter to get the best out of her, helping her get through her grades in confidence and with great results.
I have been having lessons from Sarah for the last year. She has helped me develop my breathing, sight reading , and voice control - all areas I wanted to improve. As a latecomer to singing, I was apprehensive about taking lessons; but I need not have been. Sarah is an excellent tutor and a sympathetic teacher. I really look forward to my lesson with her each week.
I've been going to Sarah for a couple of years now for singing lessons. She has helped me sing in my natural voice, which I wasn't doing before. She is willing to work on any song of my choice with me and will give helpful coaching on how to sing it and how to perform it. She will also help me note-bash difficult songs for my choir. She does sight-singing with me every lesson and has helped me improve that. Her vocal warm-ups at the beginning of the lesson are excellent. She is always friendly and encouraging.
Sarah is such a brilliant singing teacher! I was so nervous about singing she made me feel so comfortable and I really learnt a lot from her. I am so thankful for her help with audition material and techniques. I’m now singing every night on stage and without her help and support this wouldn’t have been possible.
I started having singing lessons with Sarah, as an absolute beginner. My wife arranged my first lesson, as a Christmas present. Before the first one I was absolutely terrified of making a fool of myself, but I needn't have worried - Sarah is brilliant, and knows how to put you at ease. I'm never going to be a fantastic singer, but I've improved tremendously since I started, and get a real feeling of elation when I do well. I thoroughly recommend Sarah as a teacher - she gets five stars!
