About Justine
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience teaching privately on a one-on-one basis. I also have experience guiding young adults through post-16 education. This involved assisting with homework and coursework. I also run JP Music and Lyrics Tutoring. JPML Tutoring delivers songwriting, lyric writing and music business workshops and short courses in and around Brighton and Hove. I am a professional lyricist and songwriter. I am very passionate about teaching. I am of a friendly and encouraging nature and I am confident I will be able to help you achieve to the best of your ability.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach songwriting, lyric writing, music business, creative writing, music theory and musicianship (this includes aural skills, sight reading and improvisation.) I teach songwriting and lyric writing for all ages and abilities, from beginners to experienced musicians. I specialised in lyric writing at university and can offer extensive tuition in this area.
I also teach music business, helping students to form a loyal fan base both locally and globally, so they can build a career and earn a living from performing or writing music (usually as an independent artist or songwriter, at least to begin with.) It takes time and hard work but it's entirely possible. Music business lessons include advice about gigging locally, learning to use social media on a professional level to build genuine connections and friendships, utilising online resources to generate income and building your knowledge of the music industry.
I also teach music theory. I help students prepare for ABRSM exams and/or complete homework and coursework. My music theory lessons will also benefit self taught musicians looking to understand theory in greater depth, and experienced musicians who play by ear and would love to learn theory.

ABRSM Music Theory Grade 5 (Distinction)

- How much do you charge?
£30 per hour and £15 per half hour.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my students' homes or online using Skype and other forms of online communication. I am happy teach students living in and around Brighton and Hove. This includes Rottingdean, Lewes, Uckfield, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Portslade and Shoreham. I teach throughout East and West Sussex but travel costs may apply (£5 of travel expense per lesson is free of charge.)
- When are you available?
I am available on weekdays during the day, as well as in the evenings. I also teach on weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and abilities. Experienced musicians often come to me for lyric writing tuition in particular. I prepare students for ABRSM music theory exams grades 5 and below.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
My lessons will be of benefit to:
- Musicians preparing for ABRSM music theory exams.
- Secondary and post-16 students looking for extra tuition when completing coursework or preparing for tests.
- Budding songwriters looking to improve their songwriting skills and create a musical identity.
- Musicians wanting to build a career and earn a living from music.
- Songwriters planning to write professional songs, possibly for an EP or album.
- Creative writers looking to develop their talent and generate income from their writing, in particular writers at beginner to intermediate level benefit from my lessons.
- In general, anyone interested in learning music theory or songwriting. I teach students of all ages and will help you meet your goals and ambitions.

I tutor online students using Skype, Google Hangouts or FaceTime. I also run online courses which can be taught in written format, this is similar to a worksheet and will be sent to you by email. We will be able to communicate by email throughout your studies.
