About Sophie
- What kind of experience do you have?
As a teacher, I have experience teaching clarinet, recorder, flute and saxophone to students of a wide range of ages and abilities. I currently teach both privately and as a peripatetic woodwind tutor in London schools. My current teaching spans from one-to-one instrumental lessons, to small group learning and ensemble coaching to whole class situations.
My performance career has encompassed an extensive range of musical genres, from medieval to present day. As a performer, I am first and foremost an ensemble player, equally at home in a symphony or musical theatre orchestra as in a small chamber group or recorder consort. However, I also have considerable solo performance experience, both in a recital setting and as soloist with orchestra.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
Guildhall School of Music and Drama
Clarinet: Andrew Webster, Joy Farrall, James Burke, Andrew Marriner, Nick Carpenter
Bass Clarinet: Rob Ault, Lorenzo Iosco
Eb Clarinet: Jennifer McLaren
Recorders: Ian Wilson, Robert Ehrlich, Karel van Steenhoven, Pamela Thorby

Everyone is a musician, they just may not have realised it yet. Whatever your goals may be, learning a musical instrument offers huge rewards, both direct and indirect, in any walk of life.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
As a professional reed player, orchestral clarinettist and early music specialist, I teach clarinet, recorder, flute and saxophone at every stage, from beginner to advanced.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
BMus (Hons) joint principal study clarinet and recorder - Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2012-2016)
MMus Orchestral Artistry - Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2016-2017)
During my undergraduate degree, I dedicated equal amounts of time to clarinet and recorder, whilst also receiving regular lessons on the flute and saxophone. In September, I will be taking up a place on Guildhall's orchestral artistry course in order to concentrate on multi-instrumental reed playing.
- How much do you charge?
My standard rates are the following:
30 minutes - £25
60 minutes - £40
I offer discounted rates if the student wishes to pay for groups of lessons in advance.
Rate if the student wishes to pay for five lessons in advance:
30 minutes - £22.50
60 minutes - £37.50
Rate if the student wishes to pay for ten lessons in advance:
30 minutes - £20
60 minutes - £35
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my home studio in North Finchley, which is easily accessible by public transport (Northern line, as well as multiple busses) and car (parking available).
- When are you available?
My availability is flexible throughout the week. I am also happy to teach during the weekend. If suitable for the student, I prefer to arrange a fixed weekly lesson time. I will teach throughout the school holidays or otherwise, as is the student's preference.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Enthusiastic students of all ages and abilities are always welcome! Whatever your age or experience, I will tailor your lessons to suit you personally, enabling you to get the very most out of your instrument.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am happy to prepare my students for graded exams, should they wish to take them, and teach from the ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses.
However, I completely understand that exams are not the best option for many. I leave the decision concerning whether or not to take exams entirely up to the student and I will always respect their choice.
Learning how to play an instrument is all about your own personal enjoyment, and whether you want to measure your progress with exams or just play a few tunes, I would be delighted to help you on your musical journey in whatever way I can!
