Tell me about some of your current students.
My youngest student is 5 years old and has recently started school. He has been taught by his mother from a very early age and is now learning with me in preparation for his ABRSM Grade 1 examination. It is interesting for me to learn a different approach, as this child has been taught in the Chinese way until now, so me and his Mum are learning from each other while this gifted child has the best of both worlds. Another student is in her 60s, having bought a baby grand piano as a retirement project. I am constantly delighted by the way she progresses, giving of her time to this new skill. It is very gratifying to see how an older person can learn and grow musically without having had the benefit of learning at an early age.
Do you have a personal message for students?
It is important that we enjoy the music and grow as people through the learning process whilst developing musicianly skills and sensitivities. I have my own ways of teaching but each student brings something to me whereby I can also continue to learn and grow. Developing your own creativity tends to enhance your understanding of the process composers are involved in, so composition is an important part of my teaching.
