Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the Cello, the Trumpet, the Piano and the Recorder.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a graduate of the Royal College of Music, where I have completed an undergraduate honors degree in performance.
What kind of experience do you have?
I am a cello tutor and a trumpet tutor for Wandsworth Schools Music, giving one to one and large group lessons during the week at Primary Schools in London and at their Saturday school in Wandsworth.
I have been teaching one to one, from my home in Lewisham for 2 years now, and have pupils ranging from aged 7 up to 35.
I collaborated with two local cellists this summer to put on a three day cello course for our pupils. Children up to age 17 attended and we also had some violinists which was excellent. The children learnt about how to play well in a string orchestra and I coached and worked with the children in smaller chamber ensembles. There was also an emphasis on the singing, clapping games and general musicianship.
Whilst at the Royal College I worked with the RCM Sparks, which is the College's Youth Music Programme run by the Woodhouse Centre. This involved taking part in composition masterclasses and orchestral string concerts attended by hundreds of children from local boroughs.
I teach part-time coaching cellists at Wimbledon High School and Bromley High School.
How much do you charge?
I charge £30 an hour for lessons. I will also teach in 45 minute lessons if this is preferable, (often more suitable for younger children) at £25.
There is an extra fee to travel to your home.
Where do you teach?
At my home in Ladywell, Lewisham and at pupils locations across London.
Nearby towns are; Lewisham, Blackheath, Greenwich, Bromley, Lee, New Cross, Deptford, Dulwich, Camberwell, Peckham, Central London, West London, South London, South East London, Victoria, Kensington, Chelsea, Sloane Square, Knightsbridge, Notting Hill, Holborn.
When are you available?
My lesson days/times are flexible. I teach during the week and on the weekends, particularly on Sundays. I also teach after school hours and in the evenings for more mature students that work 9-5.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
From age 5 upwards, all are welcome!
Complete beginner to advanced grade 8 players.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM and GSMD Grade examinations.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Orpheus Foundation Orchestra, the Orion Orchestra, The Situation Opera Orchestra and the London Arts Orchestra.
I teach at Wandsworth School's Music Centre and at Wimbledon High School.
I form half of cello duo, Two Bridges.
Where and with whom did you train?
I went to the Junior Royal Academy of Music and studied with Erica Simpson and Ben Davies.
For my Bachelor of Music degree in Performance, I attended the Royal College of Music, studying with Leonid Gorokov and Thomas Carroll.
I was section leader of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra until the age of 19.
Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my students is a complete beginner and is only 7 years old but enjoying learning how to play the cello very much. Another is 22 and used to learn the piano and so knows how to read music which is a real advantage. She is doing very well and is a pleasure to work with.
