About Christina
- What kind of experience do you have?
In January 2014 I began working for Derbyshire Music Partnership (DMP) running several 10 week Pbone ((concealed information) projects in Primary schools in the Chesterfield area. I am also assisting on DMP's Sing2gether and Singing Stars programmes ((concealed information).uk).
As a passionate vocal and brass teacher at Durham Music Service I worked in various primary and secondary schools across the region. Alongside individual and group vocal teaching, I have delivered programmes in Recorder, Panpipes, Glee Club, mixed Brass and directed vocal ensembles, all of which involved communicating successfully with, teachers, colleagues and parents, especially when delivering performances. At St. Mary's RC Catholic School I experienced teaching all year groups at KS3, GCSE and A level. I have also taught using the Musical Futures initiative.
Before studying for my PGCE I was a dedicated self-employed peripatetic brass teacher, accredited to Derbyshire Music Partnership working in primary and secondary schools across North West Derbyshire. I have worked with children and adults of all ages and was involved with over twenty different Wider Opportunities projects.
I have a particular passion for teaching students with Special Educational Needs and Autism. I have found that my enthusiasm for ethnomusicology, specifically from Andean traditions, has helped me discover new methods to make music more accessible and engaging for these students. Consequently I have run several world music projects using traditional Andean instruments and will soon be assisting with a 'Boomdang Drumming' project within a special school in County Durham.
Previous to my PGCE I directed five ensembles, three of which I established myself in September 2008. All have grown into successful and popular ensembles for young wind players in the area. At St. Mary's RC School I directed the Junior Choir and a year 7 production of Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat. Whilst with Durham Music Service I have established and directed the Bishop Auckland Area Choir and fulfilled the role of 'Assistant Vocal Coach' for Durham County Youth Choir.
I have a longstanding interest in musical theatre and have performed in both lead and principal roles, as well as competitively. I have been involved in music with local amateur groups as well as school, county and professional ensembles throughout my musical career. This helps me to advise pupils, of any standard, who wish to become involved in such activities both within their school and across a wider area.
As a trombonist I have played with a variety of ensembles from orchestras to funk groups, performing across the UK, throughout Europe and in Japan. Presently, I am a member of Renegade Brass Band, a jazz/funk/hip-hop ensemble based in Sheffield, and also Big Band Theory based in Leeds. Both of which provide me with recording and performance experience. I also have the piano skills to accompany my pupils at a lower level and I am striving to improve these skills.
