About Matthew
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have worked with some of the top London Orchestras, including the London Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras, and have taught privately for three years. I have also taken part in multiple outreach sessions around London, so have a good experience of working with children.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I currently don't have a DBS, but can obtain one upon request.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I went through Junior Royal Welsh when I was younger, then to Chetham's School of Music, and after that I did my degree at the Royal Academy of Music. I have studied with many professional tuba players and brass players, from NYO tutors when I was younger, to top class musicians such as Ian Bousfield. My primary instrumental teacher was Patrick Harrild, from the London Symphony Orchestra, and other teachers include Brian Kingsley (Opera North) and Sean O'Neill (Welsh National Opera)
- Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my current tuba students gained a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain this year, at the age of 16.

Hello, I am a freelance tuba player in London, with many years experience of working with adults and children in tuition.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I am primarily a tuba teacher, but teach all brass instruments, as well as music theory and aural skills.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a first class degree in performance from the Royal Academy of Music, and have Grade 8 piano, which I carried on into my degree as accompanying skills.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour for tuition that isn't in my specialisation, £20 per half hour, and £40 per hour for tuba. If I have to travel outside of Zone 2 I would charge an extra fee based on how far away the lesson was.
- Where do you teach?
I live in Willesden Green, Brent, in North West London. I am always happy to travel to students' homes to teach, and never mind travelling far to teach.
- When are you available?
I am a freelance musician so I have a very flexible timetable, meaning I'm sure there will always be a time I can fit you in.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from beginners to advanced, of all ages and abilities, as I've probably encountered it all before!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare pupils for ABRSM and Trinity Laban exams, up to diploma standard, and academic studies such as GCSE's and A Levels.
