About Waka

- What kind of experience do you have?

Teaching is a very important part of my career. As an active professional pianist, I possess over 20 years of combined teaching and performance experience. I have taught pupils at all levels, at various schools and privately, as well as professional piano teachers. I am competent with beginners to LRSM diploma standard. As Artist Director of the biannual Bristol International Duo Festival I have also organised masterclasses with students from local schools in the Bristol area as part of the festival program. I believe there is great joy and satisfaction to be derived from learning the piano. Therefore, when I teach I endeavour to impart this feeling of enjoyment and essential love of music to my students.

As a teacher, I believe it is important to endeavour to find ways to foster and further a student's musicianship and skills. In particular, I like to organise regular performance classes and concerts. To create a platform where students can play for each other and inspire one another. I encourage my students to play a variety of pieces and periodic styles such as piano trios, duets, duos, and of course solos, ranging from Baroque to more contemporary living composers' works. As a result of this encouragement my students have achieved many prizes at various music festivals and competitions. Furthermore I believe that my own professional performing experience is an asset that I have found to inspire students with a positive direction toward learning and practicing music.

As a performer, I have performed at many venues both in the UK and abroad.
My recent concerts including recitals at the National Cherry Blossom Festival at Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, Windsor Festival, Chichester Festivals, Adur Arts Festivals, the Newark Festival, Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, Fairfield Hall, Bridgewater Hall and St George's Bristol.

As well as my solo career, I have an internationally successful piano duo Piano 4 Hands with English Pianist Joseph Tong.
