Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English literature from KS3 onwards, to university level.
I also teach literacy skills from KS2 onwards. I can help with grammar, spelling, reading, handwriting, reading choices and vocabulary.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a PhD in English Literature 1918-1939.
I have an MA, Distinction, in Romantic Literature 1780-1830.
I have a BA Hons, First Class, in English Literature and Language.

What kind of experience do you have?
I taught English literature to undergraduates for four years, covering prose and poetry from the 18th century to the 20th. As part of that role, I set and marked essays, offered constructive criticism and feedback, and helped my students realise their full potential.
I currently teach literacy to children from KS 2 - Years 4 and 6 - heping them with specific literacy challenges including spelling, handwriting, reading and vocabulary. I also have experience of teaching a gifted and talented KS2, offering suitable challenges and stimuli to meet their needs.

How much do you charge?
I charge £20 an hour for KS2, £25 an hour for KS3, £30 an hour for GCSE, and £35 an hour for A level.
I charge £40 an hour for university-level work.
For proof-reading and essay-writing work, my fee is £30 an hour.
There is a 10% reduction for a second child in the family receiving tutoring.
There is a 10% reduction for block-booking of 10 tutorials or more.
These fees include planning time, travel costs, and the cost of any additional materials.

Where do you teach?
I teach in my students' homes. I am closest to Pocklington and its surrounding villages in East Yorkshire, but will travel to York, Market Weighton and Driffield. I will travel up to 15 miles.

When are you available?
I am available every weekday evening, except Tuesday, after 7:00pm.
I am available on some weekends, by arrangement.
I am also available between 10:00am and 2:00pm on Fridays.
All these days and times apply to online tutoring; in addition, I can offer 1:00pm-3:00pm every weekday for this service.
I am happy to tutor during the school holidays.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am competent to teach all levels between KS2 and undergraduate.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I feel confident I can prepare my students for GCSEs, A levels, and undergraduate degrees.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I am CRB checked and approved.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
For older students, I am happy to offer a tutoring service via email or skype.
I will also take on proof-reading and essay-writing via email.

Where and with whom did you train?
I studied for my undergraduate degree at the University of Hull.
I obtained my MA and PhD at the University of York.

Tell me about some of your current students.
I currently tutor students from years 4 and 6 (KS2), and am helping them with literacy skills by using a holistic and theme-based approach which engages as it instructs. My standards and expections are high, and I help my students meet them by maintaining a positive approach and devising tailored learning-solutions for each child.

Do you have a personal message for students?
I want you to lose the fear, gain the confidence, and learn to love English literature and language - and I can support you every step of the way.
