Lingua Genesis Ltd

"The initiation of a life-long learning endeavour from early years to adulthood"
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Welcome to Lingua Genesis Ltd.

I am an easy-going and versatile 29-year old teacher of modern foreign languages and a self-taught linguist in a handful of others. I teach German, Spanish, English (as a Foreign Language and part of a literacy programme to help with dyslexia), French and Italian, for a rate of between just £15 and £20 per hour, depending on the subject and distance travelled. There are reductions for lesson bookings of 90 minutes and longer. I am also able to offer opportunities for you to learn Japanese and Greek and also provide a translation service in over 20 world languages.

I am motivated and determined in teaching my specialist subjects, which include several languages at all levels (with ample experience) and also mathematics to A-level. I teach to a wide age range (7 - 84 years, as of April 2010) and within numerous learning scenarios (schools, homes, colleges, business environments). I nearly always travel to the tutee and there is no extra cost towards travel expenses if you live within a 12-mile radius. All my resources and long-distance learning products are free of charge.

* Please note that if you are interested in adult classes or children's clubs (German / Spanish / French, English, maths or Italian) in the Barnsley / Sheffield, Wakefield / Leeds and Manchester areas, these will be run from September 2011. The deadline for application is 31st August 2011. A minimum of eight individuals is required per class. At a time where funding is being cut by councils for language tuition, Lingua Genesis Ltd can guarantee you a place in exchange for a low-cost fee. We will not cap the number of learners we take on, but ensure class sizes are kept to a reasonable maximum, thus ensuring maximum learning.

* Translation work is also offered from and into the following languages: English, German, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, French, Greek, Turkish, Italian, Latin, Czech, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Swedish, Romanian and Chinese.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold nine GCSEs (grades A* - B) in German, Spanish, geography, maths, physics, chemistry, biology, English language and English literature.

I have four A-levels in German (A), Spanish (A), maths (C) and general studies (C).

I gained a 2:1 Joint Honours Degree in German and Spanish from the University of Leicester in 2004. This featured a distinction for spoken German and Spanish.

Thereafter, in 2005, I achieved a pass, with distinction, in my Post-Compulsory Education and Training Degree from the University of Huddersfield.

I completed an intense introduction into neuro-linguistic programming, i.e. how to effectively model the behaviours of successful language learners, with Dr. Paul Peace, in January 2008.
What kind of experience do you have?
I am highly experienced in delivering extremely effective tuition, using a mix of traditional and highly innovative modern foreign language tuition strategies to primary school aged children, pupils in secondary education, A-level students, adult learners, married / unmarried couples, immediate families, senior citizens and junior / senior business employees.

I started out as a student tutor as early as 1999, helping GCSE students of German and Spanish to prepare for their GCSE examinations.

I have also taught German in the following businesses, e.g. LNS Turbo, Noveon, SIG Trading Ltd and Deutsche Bahn, and delivered Spanish tuition to employees of the 02 mobile telephone company in Leeds. I have also tutored to employees of the wine company, J. García Carrion, which is housed in Prospect House, also in Leeds. I have also tutored English as a Foreign Language to a freelance journalist and a former communications adviser in the health sector, in addition to a senior HR director of Coca Cola Enterprises, based in Wakefield.

I have taught, since 2005, in further education, working under Protocol Professional at the Park Lane College in Leeds (2005-06), teaching GCSE pupils and AS-level students in German. I was called back by Park Lane in February 2009 to teach a beginners course in German at the Logik Centre to individuals who study at or are employed by the University of Leeds. In June 2009, I undertook supply work in Spanish for three weeks at Tapton School near Sheffield, prior to returning to the University of Leeds to deliver another two courses: September 2009 - December 2009 and January 2010 - March 2010. From the autumn of 2009 until the summer of 2010, I taught beginners level Spanish at Hillsborough College, Sheffield, and shall continue to teach there until at least the start of June 2011.

Otherwise, I teach small groups or immediate families, which has proven to be a very rewarding experience. Many children are encouraged to learn when they gently pit their wits and knowledge against that of their parents and siblings.

As far as my tuition in mathematics, which I studied at A-level (1998 - 2000), is concerned, I recently taught a 16-year old boy over a 8 - 10 week period in preparation for an examination resit at his secondary school (he passed the foundation tier with a grade C) and have also tutored to a 16-year old girl, who is taking the modular GCSE exam and whose confidence and understanding of the individual course units improved tremendously over the 2009 - 2010 academic year. She scored a grade 'C' at foundation tier. From February until June 2010, I taught GCSE maths to a 16-year old son of a friend of mine who lives in the village of Dodworth and he achieved a 'C' grade at foundation tier.

I have also tutored to a lady from Dodworth who was studying GCSE maths at Northern College. She felt as though she was being required to do too much work, which was not being checked regularly by the teacher, and felt under pressure as a result of the teaching pace being adopted to ensure that the syllabus is completed and was being thoroughly revised before the arrival of the summer. I helped her to develop her understanding of maths through clarity of explanation and by offering a number of ways in which it is possible to tackle any number of exam paper questions. I gave her advice as regards the stages of her working out which she must note down in order to gain as many marks as possible from each of the examination papers she would sit. She achieved a grade 'B' on the higher tier paper.

Between September 2008 and May 2009, I helped a 14-year old home-tutored boy to achieve a grade C at foundation tier in GCSE maths and taught him from the AS-level syllabus between September 2009 and May 2010. He achieved a grade 'C'. He was initially a very reserved teenager, but matured enormously over the years during which I taught him.

See below for more experiences with other students, particularly ones doing modern languages, or type in Carl Dundas on YouTube to find out more.

As of 2005, I have gradually been trying to become self-taught in several foreign languages.

Since 2007, I have worked hard to develop a conscience about how I integrate and make highly effective use of a wide variety of self-teaching techniques and different resources to achieve accelerated linguistic proficiency. My work has recently aroused the interest of the distinguished linguist, Professor Alexander Arguelles, along with the journalist and researcher into multiple language learning, Professor Michael Erard.
How much do you charge?
I currently charge a middle-of-the-road rate of between £15 and £20 per hour per session, depending on distance and level of learning, although this rate is proportionally reduced as the length of session and the number of people in that session increase. The fee which is quoted covers stationary, materials, teaching, travel time, petrol expenses, online support for sending additional learning resources, long-term and free-of-charge independent learning resources, accommodation of rearrangements, and accountancy logs, etc. However, students will now incur fees for cancellation of sessions which occur less than 24 hours before they are scheduled to take place, unless rearrangements can be made. A full fee is required in the event of a no show or an on-the-door cancellation. In some instances, rearrangements can be made.
Where do you teach?
It is nearly always the case that my colleagues and I teach at the client's home, although they and I have been more than willing to teach individuals in the local library and / or other quiet public places, in Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Wakefield, Leeds, Huddersfield. and Manchester. To date, I have never taught anyone at my home, since I have always offered to travel to the other person's home, not least because I am aware that people feel much safer in an environment with which they are familiar.
When are you available?
The team and I are currently reasonably flexible, particularly during the day time. However, do feel free to enquire in any case and I will do my utmost to satisfy your availability. It will help if, in your initial enquiry, you could least the days and times when you plan to receive the tuition.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have taught and will teach to primary school children, GCSE pupils, A-level students, adult learners, full families, senior citizens and any business employees / employers.

I also offer opportunities for youngsters and grown-ups to attend children's clubs and adult classes respectively, however, groups are never overcrowded, as this gives everyone as much opportunity as possible to participate in and feel welcome, as part of a full class. Moreover, people are grouped more or less according to their level of language and on the basis of how long they have studied prior to enrolling for a particular course. During class contact time, however, students are never isolated and made to feel as though they are behind and need to catch up. They are never given work to go through at their own pace, but even so, any work is always marked and returned promptly, with constructive feedback. Even so, the emphasis is on the development of oral proficiency, both with and without the availability of written language to develop this particular skill, as students are advised not to become too reliable on reading notes when performing role-plays or other verbal-related exercises. Moreover, the class activities include pairs carrying out the same tasks or being involved as a whole and focusing on one task for all.

The same payment policy as outlined above applies to children's clubs, too. Lingua Genesis Ltd realises very much the need for children to learn modern foreign languages to such a degree that they enhance their personal development and also, in later years, their professional development, since linguistic abilities play a key role in having a competitive edge during the job interviewing process and the labour market.

Children are at a greater advantage than other age groups in terms of being able to acquire a new modern foreign language, since they pursue their natural curiosities, have often next to no reservations about making mistakes, and will take throughout their life fond memories of learning this particular gamut of subjects on the condition that they were delivered in an atmosphere of fun, enjoyment and variety.

The company appreciates that children are very different and gives them the opportunity to express themselves during class contact time. The age range is sub-divided in such a way that there are never too many children of a vast age range in our classroom, e.g. 4 - 12 years, since this would defeat the object of effective learning and the differences in ability, age and level could potentially lead to the manifestation of inappropriate forms of behaviour which distract keen children who are willing to learn.

Lingua Genesis Ltd recognises that children must be given free reigns to express themselves as they please and choose particular content for learning, whilst at the same time allowing the class teacher to have some input as regards the type of material which it would be useful for the children to cover and utilise in pursuit of their own learner needs. The success of the children's clubs is based on the development of personal confidence, oral linguistic proficiency, competitiveness, mutual respect, good manners, team work, independent learning and additional online support whereby parents can download and make excellent use of the suggestions for differentiated learning exercises, so that the children do not easily forget what they have learned in previous weeks.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am able to prepare learners for SATs, GCSEs, A Levels and degree exams. I am deeply familiar with the AQA, Edexcel and OCR examination awarding bodies.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes. I reserve clients the right to view a valid CRB check and on occasions request that another be issued at any appropriate time in the future, as and when it is needed. The most recent CRB issue was initiated in July 2010.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I have taught modern foreign languages online, using both MSN Messenger and Skype. Many people believe that face-to-face lessons guarantee the greatest amount of success, but I am inclined to think differently. Arrangements to meet are discussed in advance and may take place at any time during the day, on the condition that a time slot is available and mutually convenient for both parties.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the National Union of Teachers (NUT).
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained as a teacher at the University of Huddersfield in 2005 and now undertake independent research into facilitated means of language acquisition, whilst also carrying out work as a self-employed teacher. I have already developed new products and revamped a number of already marketed resources, having sold in excess of 2,500 - 3,000 copies of my materials to language learners across the world since 2006. I have since developed numerous approaches to accelerated language learning in the five years or so of my career to date.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I have many students on a weekly basis and am very proud of each of their achievements. They are currently aged between 7 and 83 years of age, are unique for their differences, and each one of them is highly enthusiastic and responds well to my commitment to their learning, both face-to-face and outside the learning environment. Over the course of 2008, as I began to develop further independent learning resources and undertake more research into how certain aspects of language could be explained in the simplest terms and rendered with fluidity, I have recognised over the past year to 18 months that all my students are displaying more progress and confidence than ever before. For me, it has been a case of reading my students and trying to understand how they process the language and making available to them a number of different self-teach techniques with which they may (not) be able to identify.

My oldest learner on roll started in April 2010 and is so enthusiastic about Spanish. She is doing tremendously well, learning alongside her next-door neighbour on a weekly basis. She is the oldest starter of a language with Lingua Genesis Ltd to date, commencing study at the age of 83 years and 4 months.

My youngest pupil is seven years of age and lives in East Ardsley in Wakefield. She is learning Spanish at Wakefield Girls Junior School, but also for one hour per week at home. Her school teacher, Liz Boyd, is evidently a passionate and enthusiastic tutor whose zest for languages has rubbed off on so many of the children. This little girl has already mastered the Spanish rules of pronunciation, is able to read the written language as fluently as she can English, and obviously studies what she learns between one session and the next. She is very fond of acting out her part in role-play situations, gives instructions to her pet dog in Spanish and has especially learned a great deal of vocabulary through the songs we have learned and some of which I have tweaked from French. I provide her mother with regular suggestions for child and parent extra learning scenarios and these have proved to encourage excellent independent learning.

Since September 2009, I have taken on a total of fourteen new adult learners, including two native speakers of Polish, each of whom used to attend an adult class at two mainstream colleges, but who found that the teachers in both cases were two keen to teach sequenced topics, without giving the learners ample opportunities to speak and develop their oral proficiency. Moreover, there was no regular marking of work and no chance for revision of vocabulary and phrases, mainly due to the fact that the external verification process was pushing for the syllabus to be completed by a set deadline. After having come to me, however, the students have come to realise that I am responsive to their desire to improve their confidence-building where the spoken language is concerned and noted the originality of the techniques which I employ in order to help them to achieve that goal. They are also grateful of the chance to learn in the comfort of their own home, be given more individual contact time than would be possible in a classroom, feel as though the tutor is keeping to their pace, and also that they are learning effectively on the basis of the simplified explanations and delivery techniques which I have sought to develop as a researcher into simplified means of foreign language acquisition.

I also teach Spanish to a 38-year old gentleman who lives in Sheffield. He is an avid fan of languages and is enrolled on a course with the Open University. He is clearly dedicated to achieving his goal to receiving a university degree and is a pleasure to teach, always ready to ask me questions relating to the ultra-advanced grammatical features of Spanish and why the language makes use of particular highly complex structures to convey particular expressions.

I also teach Spanish to an 82-year old lady and her daughter, both of whom started to learn the language in the autumn of 2007. Both of them are very keen and have developed a high level of understanding, confidence and proficiency, especially over the last six months.

One of my learners of German is a 13-year old boy who had to catch up with his fellow pupils after changing forms at school. He was very reserved at the outset, although showed during the very first lesson that he was able to absorb and recall a great deal of vocabulary relating to particular topics. A keen speaker, as opposed to a listener, he has now gained in confidence and continues to receive praise from me, not least because of his imitation of my pronunciation and intonation - two key factors which aid personal linguistic development. Not keen to be given homework or feel as though he is being passively taught, I always give him the reigns to show off what he knows by telling me what he has learned from previous sessions and how the vocabulary and phrases which I cover with him would be used in realistic settings in the outside world. His response to this approach is extremely positive indeed.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Never be put off from learning a language, or even believing that you have the ability to master one, just because you might have lost faith as a result of previous bad experiences. Lingua Genesis Ltd can model its set of approaches to make learning effective and get you up to standard quickly where oral linguistic proficiency is concerned.

Enjoy your learning, study independently for at least 15 minutes per day, or as often as possible, and expose yourself to as many methods and resources as possible. Variety is the spice of life and the key to success where language learning is concerned. You need not look any further than the videos I have released on YouTube.
