- Kat Marks is a creative leader in fashion enterprise and design with focus on pattern-cutting, sewing/material manipulation, and illustration with the use of digital platforms including Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Creative design in the fashion industry including accessory, womenswear and menswear design. This also includes basic to advanced pattern-cutting and sewing/construction techniques and methods in the creation of garments.
Fashion illustration using a variety of materials and techniques.
Hands-on workshops in traditional leather-craft (cutting, dying, hand-sewing), bag making and leather-moulding.
Digital platforms including basic Adobe Photoshop for fashion retouching, basic to intermediate Adobe Indesign for fashion promotional materials and portfolio-building and basic to advanced Adobe Illustrator for fashion flats and specification/technical drawings.
Creativity coaching in the development of fashion portfolios and CV's for university application and/or industry presentation. Creativity coaching also applies to tuition focused on helping my clients prepare for their first year at university and/or working through individual design projects. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- In 2008 I graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design from Toronto's premier School of Fashion at Ryerson University. In 2009 I relocated to London to study at London College of Fashion to which I graduated in 2011 with a Master of Arts in Fashion Artefact (accessory).
- What kind of experience do you have?
- As an establish designer, my work has been widely published in such magazines at Italian Glamour and Dazed Digital. I have collaborated with some of the industries most prestigious members such as iconic British photographer Nick Knight of SHOWstudio.com. Team-building and fashion film is part of my practise. I use film and photography as a way to communicate my vision to a larger audience.
I have extensive experience in fashion design and the creation of garments and accessories. My skills range from illustration, design, pattern-cutting, and sewing. I work with a variety of materials such as leather and acrylic Perspex in the creation of fashion artefacts and accessories.
I use Adobe Illustrator to create patterns and technical drawings and Adobe Indesign to create promotional material and portfolios.
I teach at several universities across the UK providing students with group and one-to-one tuition in fashion and accessory design, including tuition on fashion technology such as laser-cutting (using Adobe Illustrator), and sonic welding. - How much do you charge?
- £35 per hour per person with travel costs to be met by the client. Minimum booking of 2 hours for London based clients. Minimum 4 hour booking for clients outside London. I am happy to negotiate a reduced rate for group sessions.
- Where do you teach?
- I am happy to travel to my client's home to teach. I am willing to travel anywhere within the United Kingdom so long as travel costs and accommodation (if applicable) are covered in addition to tuition hourly rate.
- When are you available?
- I am available Monday to Sunday (including holidays) between 8 am and 10 pm.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- Majority of my clients are university students and professionals in the corporate world and creative industries but I am happy to teach under 16's so long as a parent is present during tuition.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Although I have never had a CRB check done, I would advocate delivering tuition in a mutually safe and comfortable environment. I insist on tuition for students under 16 years of age be conducted in the clients home with a parent/guardian present.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I do not provide online tutoring, but in addition to tuition, I provide my clients with a 2 week period after our sessions to email me with additional questions regarding our work together.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- International Talent Support - An organisation that showcases and supports emerging talent in the fashion industry (2011 Accessories finalist)
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- Amongst my current students are first year BA fashion and accessory design students undertaking study at Coventry University and DeMontfort University. Together we work with design/illustration, pattern-cutting and sewing techniques and craftsmanship in a variety of materials. There is focus on creating and building dynamic portfolios in preparation for entering into industry.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Be adventurous and dream big!
Please feel free to email me to discuss the type of tuition you are seeking and I am happy to customise a session to fit your needs.
