Personal Message
What I love about teaching is being able to convey my passion for music and sharing my knowledge. Learning an instrument is a very fulfilling hobby, and I really enjoy helping people achieve their goals.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Aside from flute I am also happy to teach piccolo, or fife which may be better suited to a young learner. This would be a great option for testing the water before committing to the purchase of a flute.
I have maintained piano as a second study and I am happy to teach up to Grade 6 level. We can also go through beginner theory alongside the lessons which is very good for helping to make sense of the many elements that we go through in each lesson. I am also able to accompany flute pupils on the piano at my house, which can be invaluable to learning.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a flautist living in Greenwich, currently studying for a Masters degree at Trinity Conservatoire of Music in London. I hold a first class Bachelor of Music degree and ABRSM Dip (flute) 2005.

I graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire in 2012 with a First Class honours degree, specializing in Flute. During my undergraduate studies I was employed by the Birmingham Music Service and also provided cover work for flute and piano teachers elsewhere at a private Music School. I have experience in teaching using a variety of methods, depending on the needs and desires of the individual. This also spans from infants to adults.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have several years of teaching experience which involves teaching in schools around London, as a peripatetic teacher and as part of the Newham Music Service (Every Child a Musician). These lessons contain a mixture of group lessons and individual on both flute and piano. Additionally, I have a number of private students, and as part of my Masters degree I have also undertaken a teaching module.

I will adapt my lessons according to the individual's requirements and make sure that they are in line with what you would like to achieve from your lessons. I teach all ages and all standards, from complete beginner to ABRSM Grade 8+. I hold an enhanced DBS certificate.
How much do you charge?
My lesson rates are £30.00 for 1 hour and £15 for 30 minutes.
If I am traveling to you, the lesson rates will be £35 for 1 hour and £20 for 30 minutes.
Where do you teach?
I generally teach at my home in Sydenham, but I am happy to travel to your home for lessons provided that the travelling time is 30 minutes or less (by public transport). My travel expenses will be added to the cost of your lessons.
Nearby towns are Dulwich, Crystal Palace and Lewisham.
When are you available?
I am available to teach in the South-East London area; I can allow flexibility with my teaching schedule. I can do my best to fit around your routine on a weekly basis.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have experience teaching all ages and abilities, spanning from 4 - 60 years.
On the flute I teach all levels, from beginner to very advanced.
On the piano I teach up to grade 6 level.
Theory Grades 1 - 5.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
If the student wishes, we can work through the ABRSM graded exams or the Trinity College London syllabus.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I do hold an up-to-date DBS Certificate, dated from August 2013.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
If you would like, I can tutor you online via Skype for flute lessons.
Where and with whom did you train?
I studied at Wells Cathedral School as a specialist musician, studying with Lisa Nelsen.
During my BMus degree I studied with Judith Hall and spent time studying in Italy as an Erasmus Scholar.
Currently I am studying with world renowned flautist Anna Noakes at Trinity Conservatoire of Music.
Tell me about some of your current students.
With my younger students we do warm up exercises to begin, and recap on a familiar tune that we gradually progress with week by week. This is learnt by memory to improve aural and memory skills, and children always really enjoy this part of the lesson!
We will then look at the piece that they have been practising during the week.
I will help them find ways to improve it or break it down to make it easier, and gradually move forward through their books when appropriate.

With more mature students, we use exercise books to increase finger strength and agility, and work through scales in more detail. We use a variety of books and I encourage them to bring or suggest anything specific that they would like to be able to play. After the first lesson I will recommend a book which I think would be best suited to the individual.
Do you have a personal message for students?
The most important thing is that you get a satisfaction from what you learn and achieve in the lessons, which will enable you to feel motivated to put aspects from the lesson into practice during the week. I endeavour to make the lesson as fun and enjoyable as possible, whilst incorporating areas of general musicianship and important attention to technique into the lesson. I will always make sure that what we have covered in the lesson is written down and that there is a clear structure for practice to help you.
