Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach mainly History and Italian to GCSE and A level students, but I also teach English literature to all ages and French.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I did my first degree at the University of Birmingham, where I obtained a high II:I in History and Italian. I also studied for a year at the Universita di Roma La Sapienza (University of Rome). I then converted to Law with the Graduate Diploma in Law, and obtained the Legal Practice Course in Law (the final course before training as a solicitor.) I am now focusing on a Doctoral Degree in Law, Medical Jurisprudence and Bioethics.
In addition to tutoring I am also a legal translator (Italian) and write legal reports for companies and charities on relevant current and new legislation.
My debut novel, 'Tea at the Grand Tazi', will be published in March 2012 by Legend Press, who also publish the American playwright Bonnie Greer.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have years of experience teaching students privately, mainly in Italian and History, but also in English Literature and French to students of all ages, from the ages of four to twenty. I also teach people who are going to live abroad to deal with bureaucracy in Italian and French or just to be able to order a drink!
How much do you charge?
For the first consultation lesson, where we discuss your aims and ability, I charge a discounted price. When a student purchases a group package of lessons, I can also provide a discounted fee. The amount I charge per lesson depends on the student's level. The fee also includes all preparation required for the lesson.
Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in South Manchester (close to Didsbury).
When are you available?
I am available to teach during the late afternoon. I also teach several evenings a week until 9pm and at the weekends.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students Italian and French at both primary level and prepare them for the GCSE and A Level examinations. I also teach these languages in a way that does not adhere so strictly to the National Curriculum to other students, including children whose parents wish them to learn a European language.
I also focus on preparing students for the A Level and GCSE History examinations, as well as English Literature.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I regularly prepare students for GCSE, A level and some university level exams in Italian, French, History and English Literature. I am always up to date with the curriculum.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have an up to date enhanced CRB and this can be produced upon request.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
The Law Society
Association of Medical Writers
The Society of Authors
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained as a lawyer with the international law firm, Norton Rose LLP.
Tell me about some of your current students.
At present I am preparing several A Level students for their History examinations. I have noticed that many bright students are often let down by educational institutions who fail to prepare them sufficiently for the rigours of the examination, and that they have not had training in analytical thought. I am experienced in helping students how to organise their thoughts and articulate them effectively.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Never be afraid to ask questions- it is the only way you will learn. Never be afraid of being laughed at for asking questions either- wise people will never laugh at curiosity and people who want to learn. Question everything.
When learning languages, it ought to be enjoyable, but practice at every opportunity you find. If you are learning a language, do not rely solely on your lessons. Surround yourself with the language- internet offers access to foreign newspapers, novels, radio and television. Use it!
