I especially enjoy teaching students on a one to one basis. The teaching is entirely student responsive, there is often a much wider range of approaches possible than in a class or in mainstream education. Results can be spectacular.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
* I tutor school age pupils towards the 11+, 13+, GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level exams. I frequently work with 9 and 10 year olds on creative writing techniques as a slow-burn approach towards the Common Entrance exam. I've had a high success rate with both the C.E and 11+.

* I teach English to foreign students or those just wanting to improve their English. I am able to teach one to one and in groups or a combination of both.

* I also provide proof reading services to school and university students. I write literacy resources for websites and organizations like the National Literacy Trust.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Level 4 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) from International House, London. This is certified by the University of Cambridge. I also have a degree in English Literature.
What kind of experience do you have?
*For the last four years I have tutored school age pupils in preparation for exams. I mainly tutor towards Common Entrance and Grammar School Entrance exams at 11+ and 13+ but I'm often brought in as a last minute revision aid for GCSE or A-level students. At the moment I have 10 long term pupils. I particularly enjoy this and I've developed a useful library of materials. Then there are several 9 and 10 year olds with whom I work on creative writing and comprehension. This has lead to work providing resources for literacy organizations and consultancy work for businesses and outreach programmes.

I have tutored pupils who have gained places at Alleyns, Dulwich College, Whitgift School, City of London, Trinity School, Wycombe Abbey, Sydenham High School, JAGS, Eltham College, Wallington and St Olave's.

*I've taught poetry classes to adults and helped with Drama Workshops and I'm also an associate consultant with the National Literacy Trust and a writing mentor with the Ministry of Stories. Last summer I worked on a project providing materials for reading groups in prisons. I have written various resources for the NLT including lesson plans based around song lyrics and the preparation of writing and literacy activities. I'm currently working on a website designed to provide creative writing prompts with a facility for writer submissions.

I have also been tutoring students in English as a Foreign Language for five years.

The first student I ever had travelled all the way from Japan to study English with me every day for four months. His project was to learn English purely with the assistance of the Harry Potter books. It was an extremely interesting, intense and slightly eccentric way to learn, but it taught me a lot about how to react to how a student responds to a stimulus.

Since then I have worked mostly on a freelance basis. However, I did work for 8 months for a company providing Business English Training for employees of Romanian Gas Companies. We provided group training as well as one to one tuition in general English.

I have established connections in Germany, Japan and Russia and provided condensed one to one courses. I am currently teaching students from Japan, the Czech Republic and Brazil as well as group sessions for South Korean Consultants. I am also preparing an Italian student for a degree level translators’ course. I do a lot of proofreading work for MA and PhD dissertations.
How much do you charge?
I charge £25 for an hour.
Where do you teach?
I live and work in Sydenham, London, SE26. At the moment I have students in Dulwich and Sydenham, Brockley, Clapham and Lewisham, but as I tend to cycle I can reach most places in South East and South West London including the boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley. If needs be I can travel further afield. I have two pupils in Knightsbridge and one in Kensington.
When are you available?
I am flexible but busy, especially during exam season. However, I always try to timetable lessons around a student’s commitments. Available six days a week, with the exception of Sunday.

There is also the possibility of scheduling 'crammer' weeks during school holidays. Often 4 or 5 days of intensive work can benefit a student as much as much as sessions over an extensive period.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages. The youngest pupil I've had was 3 and the oldest 64!

I also provide guided conversational practice. I can teach writing skills or preparation for exams or job interviews. I have worked with French actors on audition practice (my wife is an actor). I use a wide variety of course materials and, of course, the full range of text books. I have many self-created resources. I teach all levels from beginners to advanced.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
11+, 13+, G.C.S.E, A-Level, Esol and F.C.E, Degree Level dissertation editing and fact checking.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained with International House, Covent Garden, London.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Several long term creative writing and comprehension pupils as well as candidates for GCSE in May/June and school entrance exams in September/January.

An advanced student and an Intermediate level EFL student as well as a small group of consultants working on Presentation level English.

I have just finished proof reading an LSE International History MA dissertation. This summer I’m working on lesson plans for the National Literary Trust. I am also working with a beginner level student who is gaining confidence after starting with 'Hello' and Goodbye'.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am friendly, patient and reliable and completely geared to the individual needs of the student. I genuinely enjoy working out how a student learns, and working out individual ways to help them. This is an opportunity that only one to one tuition provides.

I am also a great believer in the local community. We're trying to get a local after school reading group going. With my non-school teaching background I can make use of approaches that often suit individuals more than standard class practice and more often than not this actually complements schoolwork. A happy outcome for the student, particularly if they did not think they could do it, is the best outcome for me as well.
