The saying is, "No pain, no gain." My method is just the opposite. I like to make learning as easy and enjoyable as possible for both children and adults. If learning is a struggle, come to me and let me take the heat out of the situation.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English at all levels and specialise in helping children and adults who are struggling with reading and writing. My aim is to raise levels of literacy and to enable children and adults to read and write with pleasure (I also help with handwriting).

I teach English literature and the analysis of texts (including Shakespeare). I can teach group sessions for GCSE English Literature.

I teach arithmetic to primary school children and adults who need to improve basic skills. Again, my specialisation is in getting children and adults who are struggling with basic mathematics to achieve fluency and confidence with numbers.

I teach ESOL.

I teach study skills and essay writing, beginning with basic structured writing for primary school children and going up to secondary, FE and HE levels.

My general aim is to help children and adults increase their levels of literacy and numeracy and to improve their study skills. I do not coach specifically for exams, but teach the skills that enable children to pass them.

I have an arts background and I am available to teach art history and do art projects with children.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA in Theatre Arts Performance with Great Distinction from California State University Long Beach (1979).

I have the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults Grade A (2002), a PGCE in Literacy (Post-Compulsory) from the Institute of Education, University of London (2009) and Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills IFL (2010).

In addition I have a City & Guilds Certificate in Pottery Skills from Hackney College (1996).
What kind of experience do you have?
I have just published my first book, Are you talking to me? A handbook of good manners for inner city children, available for £7.99 plus p&p from Feedaread.com under children's non-fiction.

I have tutored the following:
Children and adults with literacy difficulties.
Primary and secondary pupils who needed help with grammar, writing and study skills.
Gifted secondary pupils who were underachieving, teaching them English literature and essay writing.

I have worked in a primary school as a Learning Support Assistant with children with disabilities or learning difficulties.
I have run art programmes in primary schools.

I have taught ESOL at a London college.
I have taught community classes for adults and children in English, history and art.
I have run homework clubs on housing estates for ages 8-19.
I have run stay and play sessions and toy libraries for under fives.
I have worked as a governess/home school tutor
How much do you charge?
I charge £20ph at my home and £25ph at your home if it is within my immediate area. I am happy to teach small groups and charge £7ph for each extra person.

If you are learning English as a speaker of another language, I am happy to discuss setting up a small class.

Please note that if you are out of my area (N15, N16 & E5) I have to charge extra for the travel time.
Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach at home, because I have an enormous library of books and teaching materials, which I like to have at hand, but I can also come to your home. My general area is N15, N16 and E5, which is South Tottenham, Stamford Hill, Stoke Newington and Clapton. My local stations are South Tottenham and Seven Sisters. I can go to other parts of Hackney and Tottenham as well as Islington, Camden and Waltham Forest, depending on how easy it is to get there on public transport. If you need my services and live out of these areas, just contact me and we'll see what's possible. Please be aware that my £25ph charge is for my immediate neighbourhood only.
When are you available?
My work schedule changes from day to day, so please contact me about my current availability. During term-time I generally teach children on Sundays and adults on weekdays, but I can be flexible.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I work with all ages, from toddlers up to adults, depending on the subject. I teach English at all levels, general education for under fives and KS1 and remedial mathematics for primary school children. I teach literacy skills to children and adults of any age.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I don't coach specifically for exams or prepare for qualifications, but I teach the English skills that will enable students to pass exams.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a current DBS (October, 2013) . I am happy to show my documents to parents and I am available to be interviewed by parents who want their child to be taught in my home.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I don't do online tutoring.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I am currently teaching handwriting, grammar and writing skills to several Year 4 boys and one adult.

I recently home-schooled two children, aged seven and nine. I was responsible for teaching English, science, history and art. We had a lot of books, atlases, maps and learning games that I have made and we began by studying one subject, Henry VIII, and then went off on tangents as the children asked questions. We ended up learning about Boudicca, European wars of religion, the Panama and Suez canals, Jules Verne, Queen Victoria, the Romanovs, World Wars I and II, astronomy, hereditary diseases, the Berlin Wall, world climates, Christopher Columbus, European exploration and colonialism, Greek and Roman gods, Roman numerals and many other fascinating things. I prepared subjects and activities and the children's interests and questions took us in to other areas. We also took trips to historic and cultural places in London and had numerous art projects on the go.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Don't think that because you are struggling that you will never learn or never improve. Anyone can learn, anyone can improve. The right teacher or tutor will show you that the work isn't as difficult as you think and that your abilities are greater than you imagine. And don't think it is too late for you to learn. It is never too late!
