- Personal Message
- I am a Cambridge graduate with lots of teaching experience. I am friendly and relaxed teacher looking to pass on my enthusiasm to others.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the Harp, Academic Music (covering theory and history) and English Literature. I also am willing to help with any university/conservatoire applications and offer interview technique advice.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- In 2011 I graduated from Pembroke College, University of Cambridge with a BA (Hons) in English Literature (1st Class). I have A-Levels in Music (A), English (A), and History (A). I have taken ABRSM exams in Harp (Grade 8 Distinction), Violin (Grade 8 Distinction), Viola (Grade 8 Distinction), Singing (Grade 7 Distinction) and Theory (Grade 5 Distinction).
- What kind of experience do you have?
- My experience includes teaching multiple private pupils Music and English on a part time basis. I have also attended several teacher training courses by the top tutoring companies in the country.
For several years I have worked at Pro Corda, the international chamber music academy - my responsibilities there have ranged from pastoral care and practice supervision, to running workshops and classes.
As a private teacher, I currently have pupils in and around London. - How much do you charge?
- I consider the first lesson as a consultation lesson, it is free: it is important for best results that both student and tutor feel well matched. If it goes well and there is a mutual desire to continue the lessons. I charge £30 for an hour long lesson. For younger children, when the lesson time needs to be shorter to accommodate a different attention span, prices can be discussed. Please don't hesitate to contact me to discuss your individual requirements.
Any cancellations need to be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance, otherwise I will still charge the full lesson fee. - Where do you teach?
- I can teach at my home or will travel to students' homes or mutually convenient locations (such as coffee shops). I live in West Hampstead, in North London, but am happy to travel to the student's area if that is convenient, though I may ask for the fee to include expenses.
- When are you available?
- My availability is flexible, including evenings and weekends; please get in touch to discuss your requirements. I am able to offer tuition during school holidays as well as term time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all levels, from complete beginner to advanced, children and adults.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- As a harp teacher, I can help prepare my students for any grade exam, and for Grade 5 theory.
As an English tutor:
In addition to coaching my students through the core material of their syllabus, I can offer guidance in any of the following key areas:
Revision Skills: I suggest helpful ways to review previously studied material, seeking primarially to broaden the student's skills beyong those applied in the school environment. I try to make the revision process as enjoyable as possible, encouraging students to set realistic but ambitious goals between tutorials.
Essay technique: talking through the requirements of an essay, working on structure and style, then offering proof-reading and detailed feeback in person or via e-mail.
Exam preparation: helping the student to fully understand what the examination expects of them, and how best to achieve the highest marks available. This preparatory process for the student includes close reading and discussion of exam scripts and marking systems. I will set practice papers ahead of a full feedback session.
University application: In coaching for a coming application I review UCAS forms, personal statements and conduct a series of mock-interviews. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied the harp with Eira Lynn Jones at Chetham's School of Music, in Manchester. I spent my early years training as a junior at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the guidance of Charlotte Seale, where I was later offered a scholarship to pursue fulltime studies. I have played in masterclasses with Helga Stork, Kathleen Bride, Andrew Lawrence-Jones, Park Stickney, Evelyn Huber and Elinor Bennett among others.
I have recently returned from Boston, where I was doing a 5-month Jazz Residency with Deborah Henson-Conant, the world's foremost electric harpist. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- I am committed to determining how each and every student learns best, tailoring my teaching approach in accordance with the student's most immediate and engaging mode of learning.
