Which subject(s) do you teach?
I tutor children and adults. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are curious, brave and mathematical boffins. Some are timid, scared and mathematically challenged. Most are in between. Some have dyscalculia, dyslexia, ADHD. They range from 7 to grandma/grandpa age I tutor full time in and I am passionate about education. I write educational blogs, read extensively and I tutor up to 10 to 15 children and adults mathematics per week. I am a qualified teacher with wide ranging experience in 11+, GCSE and the QTS Maths skills test. Many children I have tutored have gained entry to private schools or grammar schools, secured good grades at GCSE and seven teachers have passed the QTS skills test, enabling them to become qualified teachers (one even did it after only 1 hour of tuition). Recent success' include a GCSE Maths student who went from an F to a B after six months of tuition and a boy who gained entry to one of the best secondary schools in the country, St Olaves. 11+, 13+, GCSE +, KS2 + and QTS Skills Test.

Tell me about some of your current students.
INITIALS HAVE BEEN USED TO ENSURE ANONYMITY D, Lewisham, preparation for QTS skills test. L has already secured job and desperately needs to pass test in order to be paid as a qualified teacher. B, Bexleyheath, aged 10, preparation for the 11+ in Bexley. N sometimes panics and when she does this, I make funny sounds including mooing like a cow when she's concentrating hard. This helps to relax her and make us both laugh. H, Victoria, aged 10, preparation for independent schools in Central London and local state schools. B, Charlton, aged 10, preparation for the 11+ in Bexley, has the grooviest hair, and when I greet her on a Saturday at midday it always looks like she's just rolled out of bed; her curls standing on end. I love her hand me down t-shirts from her older punk loving bro. S is smart, works hard and finds the weirdest things funny. When she doesn't know something she looks me straight in in the eye and when I raise my eyebrow, she mimics me and shakes her head from side to side. L, Catford, aged 15, preparation for Foundation GCSE. P needs a C to pursue his career as an electrician. He has a good grasp of most topics but needs a lot of support with the basics: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. V, Woolwich, aged 15, preparation for Foundation GCSE. A has trouble with the basics of maths and I work hard to strengthen his grasp of the fundamentals. M, Eltham, aged 10. Supporting S prepare for the 11+ Bexley and 11+ Kent Tests. I quote S as saying "I learn more with A in an hour than I do at school in a whole week". Surely, I can't be that good! I guess we work well together. He is making fantastic progress. R, Sidcup, aged 10. G is working really well and is acheiving her class targets. She is making steady progress in preparation for Bexley 11+ next year. A, East Ham, aged 10. A is so much fun to be around. Her enthusiasm for maths bowls me over sometimes and because she is enjoying it so much, she has learnt much. She has now been moved up to the top group. Well done A! Y, Blackheath, aged 10. Y sometimes finds it difficult to concentrate but now with sustained focus she is able to hold numbers more easily in her head. Her parents and I have noticed a marked improvement.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Why I tutor? I love what I do. I get to hang out with children. We learn maths together. I am as good as I am, thanks to the children – they’ve taught me everything I know. It sounds cheesy but it’s true. I’ve been able to find out how they learn and in turn, impart this knowledge to the next children I tutor. As a result, I’m constantly learning new things and expanding my reportoire of methods. I also love the fact that each child is different. Each has their own quirky personality. I’ve met all sorts of children so far. From bubbly to shy. From funny to quiet. I have a strong bond with many of the children. I try, nevertheless to nurture each child and I take their wellbeing very seriously. Tutoring can be incredibly positive but with little consideration for the child’s self-esteem it can be equally negative. I read lots about education with particular emphasis on home education and maths education for young learners; in fact I’ll be starting an MA in Maths Education at the Institute of Education this September. What I’ve come to learn from tutoring and from my reading is that good teaching doesn’t always equal good learning. Whilst I think I’m the man for the job, it’s not because I’m an expert at maths or at teaching it, it’s because I place a lot of emphasis on your child’s mood and energy levels.
