What kind of experience do you have?: SINGING BIOGRAPHY

Hannah Northedge who grew up in Leicester and Brisbane, Australia became a professional vocalist in her teens singing and playing guitar in venues around Leicester. Her mother had also been a professional singer on the Leicester scene in the 1960s.

Hannah had sung in choirs from the age of 10 and this influenced her decision to train as an opera singer mostly for the challenge. She won a place at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama but at the back of her mind was the thought that her true voice lay in jazz and pop, the music she connected with most emotionally. Hannah’s friends had always commented that she had a definite jazz and country “sound” to her low pitched voice, so she chose to return to her first love, singing with jazz and swing ensembles in the UK, abroad and on cruise ships.

She moved to London in 2001 and quickly immersed herself in the jazz scene and formed her own jazz band comprising some of the most respected musicians in the jazz sphere, She has had the privilege of performing at venues such as The 606 Jazz Club, Westminster Methodist Central Hall for Her Majesty the Queen and Tony Blair, The Barbican Centre with Dave Brubeck and his Family Quartet, Westminster School, The Royal Albert Hall and The Royal Festival Hall. She has played at all the major hotels in London including The Park Lane Hotel and Dorchester.

She has sung as a guest with The Rob James Orchestra, Rockin’ in Rhythm Swing Band, The Rat Pack Trio and Orchestra UK Theatre Tour, Ronnie Smith (composer and former BBC Big Band leader) and even London Symphony Chorus and London Philharmonic Chorus. She currently works with Simon Wallace (composer with Fran Landesman and pianist), Kit Massey and Christian Vaughan.

In 2008 Hannah sang with The Les Paul Trio in New York City and she was also recently contacted by Tim O’Connell, award winning songwriter for the late Johnny Cash, to record some of his songs. She will go to Nashville in 2011 to record a country album with him.

In 2007 Hannah was asked to record part of the soundtrack with her own choir The Hannah Northedge Singers for the feature film The Oxford Murders starring John Hurt and Eljiah Wood. She recorded at Abbey Road Studios with film composer Roque Banos and also appears in several scenes in the film.

In 2011 Hannah will release her new album, that is a collection of self penned country jazz songs and her own arrangements of standards. Musicians playing on it are composer and arranger Simon Wallace (who writes with Fran Landesman), Matt Ridley (bass player for Darius Brubeck), John Blease (drummer for Newton Faulkner) and other world renowned musicians.

Hannah has had recent airplay of tracks from this forthcoming album on Jazz FM and BBC Radio.

Hannah teaches singing privately to individuals and groups. She is a judge for nationwide singing contests Live and Unsigned 2011 and Open Mic UK 2011.

TEACHING BIOGRAPHY

Hannah has been teaching singing for over 14 years privately for international company Vocaltutor, in schools, at night classes and for small and large ensembles.

She currently coaches over 30 singers.

Singers of all abilities are welcome, especially very nervous students.
Tuition in all musical genres is offered encompassing pop, jazz, rock, country, blues, musical theatre and classical.
