Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
As my principal study is the trumpet this is my primary subject. However, I am more than happy to take on students wishing to play any brass instrument as I have a strong grounding in brass technique. In addition to this I teach both the bass guitar and electric guitar, particularly welcoming those just starting who have an interest in approaching Popular and or Rock/Indie music. My life outside of the Guildhall school is a busy one and in addition to my trumpet studies I perform and record under the alias Professor Penguin. From this I have drawn a lot of practical experience playing live gigs, and having completed my album last summer I have developed a strong command over music technology. I am therefore able to offer lessons in both Logic Pro (Apple based software) and song-writing/musicianship.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have both Grade 8 classical Trumpet and Grade 5 Jazz Trumpet with ABRSM. Other musical qualifications include Grade 5 Jazz Piano and Grade 5 Theory. I have 10 GCSE's and 3 A levels in Music, English Literature and Philosophy and Ethics.

What kind of experience do you have?
My teaching experience is particularly varied and ranges from one to one lessons to large scale workshops as part of a team involving over 200 children. As part of The Guildhall Chamber Ensemble I have given concerts and workshops in The Republic of Ireland, England's Northwest and East London. Furthermore I recently went to Iceland with a group of students from some of Europe's top Conservatoires and enjoyed a fantastic experience working with members of a community which culminated in a performance composed entirely by the students and community.

How much do you charge?
My rate is £25/Hour and £12.50/Half hour. Travel expenses will also be required if I need to leave Travel Zone 3.

Where do you teach?
I am currently living in Leytonstone, E11 and have a large and well maintained room suitable for teaching. The room also has excellent recording facilities which is useful for allowing the student to be able to reflect and therefore aid them in their musical progression. If, however, it is not possible to attend lessons in Leytonstone I am more than happy to travel. Additionally I am also available to teach from my parents' home in Beckenham, BR3.

When are you available?
Evenings and weekends are typically the best times for me to teach. Whilst I recognize completely the importance of consistent tuition to the pupil I am very understanding of changing schedules and am willing to be flexible. I like to think that between myself and the pupil or indeed the pupil's parent or guardian we can come to an arrangement that is suitable.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am welcoming of any age and any level of ability. As each student is different I am always keen to ask what they would like to gain from the lessons and then as the student progresses we can work together to find the best way of reaching the students goals and aspirations.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Graded exams on either the Trinity Guildhall board or ABRSM can be prepared for. However, if it is the student's wish or the wish of a parent/guardian to leave graded exams altogether I am more than happy to accommodate this.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
As I have a reliable wireless internet connection and smart phone I am usually able to check and send emails throughout the day. Any relevant correspondence between myself and a pupil is welcomed and I will charge nothing for offering any required advice.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of both PPL and PRS.

Where and with whom did you train?
I am currently in my last year at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. My primary teacher is Anne McAneney of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and I also have regular contact with some of London's top teachers including Paul Beniston (LPO), Paul Cosh (ex BBC Symphony) and Steve Keavy (Natural Trumpet). As mentioned in my introduction I have recently been offered a place on the Masters course at the Guildhall School.

Tell me about some of your current students.
As is previously mentioned I have a good deal of experience with students of any age or standard. Whilst it is important for me to keep student details confidential I have had a particularly rewarding experience in the past with a young student who suffers from dyslexia. The student was very musical and worked hard however found it difficult to read music at sight and at speed. Although this was a tough challenge for both myself and the student we both worked with determination to overcome the problem and the students success in passing Grade 1 has installed them with confidence to pursue the trumpet and carry on improving their reading skills.

Do you have a personal message for students?
First of all thank you for making it to the end of this interview! I hope it answers most of your questions however don't hesitate to contact me should you require any information. I look forward to hearing from you and wish you the very best of luck in your musical pursuits, Jonny.
