- I am Becky, a brass teacher living in Birmingham.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- My specialisms are trombone, euphonium, music workshops and theory but I can teach all brass instruments and am keen to get players started on their musical journeys.
I also have a lot of experience in musical outreach and workshops, so can teach workshop skills or run workshops for groups of students. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I am in my final year at the Birmingham Conservatoire (BMus(hons)), studying trombone with Ed Jones (principal of the CBSO) and Bob Hughes (ex bass trombonist of the LSO).
I am grade 8 distinction on trombone and euphonium. - What kind of experience do you have?
- I have lots of playing experience in a wide variety of groups. I have played in all the major ensembles at the conservatoire and have sat in the principal seat of the repertoire orchestra, brass band, composers orchestra and thallein (contemporary) ensemble. I have played in many orchestras including the Rehearsal Orchestra, with whom I regularly play bass trumpet, Amadeus Orchestra, European Vacation Chamber Orchestra and the Birmingham Concert Orchestra. I was a member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, where I held the seat of principal Euphonium for 2 years. I have played in many brass bands across the West Midlands, including Wigston Brass Band and Cubbington Silver Band and dep for any occasion from competitions to fetes.
I also play for Bard Brass a professional 10 piece ensemble, who commission and premiere new music and play for sessions and events.
As a workshop leader, I have devised my own series of workshops which I ran over 5 weeks in a primary school in north Birmingham. I have worked as a student leader with the CBSO musical leadership project in schools in the Selly Oak area, alongside musicians and leaders from the CBSO. I have also assisted in workshops with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.
I have worked for two years as a mentor at the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire, working with talented young musicians of 10-18 years of age.
I have worked with dyslexic pupils, teaching music theory on a one to one basis.
I have a 100% pass rate for grade exams with all my private pupils. - How much do you charge?
- Consultation lessons are £12 for an hour. I am also happy to meet to recommend an instrument for a student, and I have several instruments they can try.
Regular lessons:
trombone, euphonium, music theory, workshops: £25 per hour/£13 per half hour
trumpet, cornet, french horn, tenor horn, tuba, early years: £22.50 per hour/£12 per half hour
travel costs of £2-6 pounds per journey, depending on distance. - Where do you teach?
- I travel to my students' homes. I am based in Birmingham city centre but am willing to travel out to Walsall, Dudley, Solihull, Coventry, Sutton Coldfield and Coventry, Warwick and Leamington Spa, though there may be an extra charge of between £2 and £6 for longer journeys.
- When are you available?
- I aim to be a flexible as possible to fit the needs of my students. I can teach afternoons, evenings or weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I have a lot of experience teaching 7-18 year olds, but I am happy to teach adults too.
I would not expect a child younger than 6 to be able to hold and play a brass instrument, but I would love to teach younger children music theory or music skills to compliment their other lessons e.g. piano. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I follow Trinity Guildhall or ABRSM graded exams, but only on the request of the student who wants a progressive challenge.
I believe it is more important to get good groundings in technique, sound and musicality and grades should be an addition to this. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes (march 2012)
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained at the Birmingham Conservatoire with Ed Jones of the CBSO, Bob Hughes (ex-LSO) I also studied Euphonium and Bass trumpet with Katrina Marzella (Black Dyke Brass Band) and David Purser respectively.
Before this I was a scholar on the Hampshire Specialist Music Course at Peter Symonds college, Winchester, where I studied with Dr, Cliff Bevan and Julian Poore. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- Music is fun and changes your life!
