- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach academic music up to degree level including GCSE and A Level. I also coach for interviews and teach theory (Grades 1-8), composition and practical musicianship.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- My first degree in music was from Cambridge University. I then completed a Masters in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music. I am currently studying for a PHD at Canterbury Christchurch University.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have taught theory up to Grade VIII. I have also coached tutees for Oxford and Cambridge interviews and taught musical analysis. From October I will be teaching undergraduates. I have lead many seminars and rehearsals. My work as a singer and composer also inform my work.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £23 per hour. In some circumstances I may also need to charge some travel expenses.
- Where do you teach?
- I usually teach at the tutee's home. I currently live in Queen's Park (NW6). At the end of September I will probably move to Bromley on the South East edge of London so I am happy to take on tutees in Greater London and the Medway towns or any other parts of Kent easy to reach by public transport from Bromley.
- When are you available?
- I tend to teach in the evenings. I am self employed so fairly flexible.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I am happy to teach all ages and levels.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I had a CRB check last autumn.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- This really depends on the nature of material I am required to teach. In the past I have helped students with essays through email correspondence. I have also set and marked tests online using internet resources such as public domain music libraries. I usually charge less per hour for this kind of work. This would be subject to negotiation.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a registered tutor for Blue Tutors.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I currently have one student whom I am preparing for a Cambridge admissions interview. This involves preparation of musical analyses, commentary on texts relating to music and mock interviews. In a couple of weeks I will also assist him in preparing an essay for submission.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- There are many reasons for studying with a tutor. Some people would like to develop a skill not being explored in their academic work, whether it be composition or improving their understanding of how music works. Others will be looking to augment their current programme of study. This might involve seeking a second opinion on an essay or hoping to increase marks in an exam. I have had very wide experiences both in academic situations and as a practical musician and I am sure I can help anyone seeking to improve their musical skills.
